Being made of cuben and having a cuben floor, either sewn in as an option or via the "groundcloth insert" that can be purchased separately, is a feature the zpacks hexamids offer....
I talked to Henry last year about doing a cuben version of the Moment and his response was that the weight savings really weren't all that significant given that the floor was still silnylon. He also...
I'll find out for sure when I get it but, as someone else here said, whatever difference there may be one way or the other (or none) is trivial. What REALLY matters, at least as far as I'm concerned,...
I defer to my more learned colleague on that point. :sun
The other advantages of cuben - lighter, stronger, virtually no stretch whatsoever in comparison to silnylon after getting wet/in very...
The cuben groundsheet lite is 56g (2 oz.: http://zpacks.com/shelter/cuben_groundsheet.shtml) so swapping out the mesh floor (I estimate it's maybe 15-20 grams for the size area involved) gives my...
Agreed. That's one of several reasons I changed to a cuben tent AND cuben stuff/dry sacks (which are roughly half the mass of comparable silnylon sacks, depending on the grades used).
Just did a test on one of Joe's zpack's dry sacks a la what you did Franco but immersed mine (NOT recommended by Joe before seam-sealing) and only "shook it off" before weighing, not waited after...
Congratulations again Pat and thanks for all that you do there to make BV a very hiker-friendly place to visit :sun
It's about a 1.5-2 ounce addition to go from an all mesh floor to one with the cuben substituted for it.
As to it being a lot of $$$, the tent is expensive period so the real question in my mind...
A NOLS instructor once said to me - after going through EVERYTHING in my pack and asking why I was carrying even a 4 gram mini-carabiner - "everything weighs something and remember: grams add up to...
Got an answer back from Joe this morning about sewing in the cuben "bath tub" that can be bought separately for the tent: for $20 he's going to sew mine into the floor after removing the netting that...

...and yes I know: a number of folks make something like this :sun
I sent Joe an email about doing this and will post when I get a reply- I'm guessing he will, no problem.
You might want to take a look at the Hexamid Solo/Solo Plus...not $400, but $285 for the Solo Plus (less for the Solo)

Not exactly the Packa but it looks like it does things the Packa doesn't...

It's a good idea - really, it is - but we all know how cell phone coverage can be limited/non-existent in places (in fact, a LOT of places on/near the trail). If a critical event arises, or you just...
Others have responded to your question but there are other important considerations when it comes to carrying maps which you, as a professed long time backpacker, may want to carefully consider.

Along the way, I've paid anywhere from $1.50 to $2.50 a load to wash - quarters only of course, and sometimes no dollar bill changer onsite (but usually). Drying costs vary a LOT depending on the...
Well said.
One of the problems with the Knobstone is access to water along the way (other than at trailheads). The Tecumseh isn't a lot better (you do have Prang Pond) but you can get a lot of intensity there...
If you want something that's 3-type fuel (wood, gas and alcohol), and don't mind spending the money, you might be interested in the so-called Appalachian Set from Evernew:

Although you've done that already you might want to consider doing it again, shortly before you leave for GA, so you'll have "muscle memory" if nothing else. Just a thought...
You can always check with the Forrest Service a few days/the day before you intend to drive down to determine whether you can acess the parking lot there where FS 42 and the AT cross.
