I stayed at the hostel in Carantuck and had them shuttle me to Stratton , they let me leave the car there for little or no fee... they could also shuttle your car north

Not all of us are lucky enough to live where outside looks like North Carolina. Here in Dallas when I "HIKE" 5 flights of a parking garage I am at the highest point for a 30 mile radius...I can walk...

Since you said section hike I will let you know my experience..I section hike every year and should finish the AT this year after starting in 2009 ..... Every start is the same ... it takes 3 days...

THanks everyone for the info ..I will be hiking southbound next Sunday and am planning on staying at that campsite if I get to Speck Pond shelter too early in the day....looks like good weather too!

One of my guides shows a campsite at the north end of the Mahoosuc notch ...is this an area that has tent sites I can count on or is really just a stealth camp?

I just completed NY and CT .....and I stayed at the Bearded Woods Hostel ....it is outstanding and they can do day shuttles so you can slack pack if you want ....

I recommend having folks from Hostel pick you up at Woody Gap on your third night of hiking. Spend night at hostel,get pizza, regroup.

You can buy one cheap at Walmart and they weigh next to nothing so why not carry one? I carry one and have only used it once but when you need it it sure is nice to have it with you.

In Feb. you will be in your tent 12-14 hours a day trying to keep warm (longer if snowed in for a day or two)...money spent on quality pad/bag is money well spent

I use aquamira but always bring some tablets along with it since it can spill or you could put the cap on the bottle wrong and have leakage.
tablets have more aftertaste but basically weigh zero

I gave a ride to a hiker a couple of years ago. He told me that he had started in GA the previous July and had to be rescued off the trail on his second day because he had under estimated the heat...
