BA Air Core Insulated for cold weather, BA Clearview Airpad for warm weather. Air Pad is a bit loud when I shift. Would like an Exped UL7 Downmat for future mountaineering though.
Does anyone know of someone who has spent every continous night of a 'thru-hike' on trail?
Thanks for the input! Area looks amazing, and I'm putting it at the top of the list of possibilities. Not sure just yet what logistics I can acquire out of Gunni/CB, so which trail I take will be...
Heading to Gunnison Colorado for 2 weeks for a class, then have 4 days afterwards for a short backcountry hike. 4 days, 3 nights total. I'd like something that I can go out from and back to Gunnison,...
Thought I'd throw this out there...
Used a Jetboil Zip my entire thru-hike. Ran out of fuel in an area w/ no cannisters available, so I made a beer-can penny stove. Used that alcohol stove, in...
I have flown 3 times, on United and AA, with full 50-70L backpacks checked(REI Flash 50, Osprey Aether 70). The only item NOT in the checked bag, was my cannister of fuel. Yes, trekking poles, tent...
While I have no doubt most of us can endure hiking in high heat and high humidy, I go hiking to have FUN. Hiking in that, especially long distance hiking, isn't what I consider fun. Don't recall any...

Looks like it might be permethrin, long sleeves, and headnets from now on. Journal article within, goes more in depth.
Isn't that already part of their job? There's a reason tests are run twice, if not more. Quite sad we need bill to reinforce that...
Always a good idea to see a Dr. before a thru-hike... unless you end up having abdominal lapo. surgery 4-5 months surgery prior to leaving. Granted, it was voluntary, but I still got the go-ahead......
Let's see....
I've seen bear boxes with holes in them where mice have a feast, mice bypass food hangers in shelters.... I sleep with my food now. Hang it in the tent, use it as a pillow, double...
tds1195,
And if you are taking snowshoes, what then? Doubt I'll be needing snowshoes in VA March 1, but would still like to know the scenario...
Only recall feeling fear a few times on trail.
- Night-hiking in the rain and mist up White Cap after a 16 mile day. Exhausted and going over a mountain in very very poor visibility, at night, is...
Hiked parts of trail in non-waterproof/non-goretex trail runners in 3-5 inches of snow. Feet never really got cold unless I stopped for more than 10 minutes. Trail-runners would then 'freeze' over...
I wouldn't say towns, but definately had to do with time of year. Walking into a super market in late November and December, looking like a hiker, I get more stares than I thought possible. I think...
pinkfloyd336,
As others have stated, caloric and protein consumption is only part of the equation. A big part, since it's possible you could burn up to 7000 calories a day, depending on factors....
Knees mostly. And making the occasional mental mistake...
Sent my pair of Darn Tuff in after they developed a hole. Got a new pair in the mail a few weeks later. Very happy with them!
I start south from HF in two weeks and am taking the following:
1 thermal bottom - 7oz
1 baselayer top thick - 11oz
1 baselayer top thin - 7oz
2 fleece tops - 8oz , 10oz
1 nike shorts/shirt -...
If crowds are really that concerning, you could always, I don't know, go SouthBound!
Use a razor blade to remove tags where appropriate. Takes some patience, but doable. Have done it on a few items...
I have a REI Quarter Dome UL which is around 4lbs. Floor space is 85x52, and being 6'1", have no problem with the room, even with a second person. Makes for a roomy 1 person, or cozy 2 person....
This kind of thing will make me second guess a trip to Machu Picchu. Sounds like the US Embassy is, well, kinda useless.
6 months ... 4700 miles .... through Alaska and the Yukon.
