You might need two weeks if you do alot of stopping in towns. The beacon personally I believe is overkill in this area. You are not far away if civilization and there are enough other hikers on the...
Thanks to all, got the ride all set up.
Thanks but I am on a schedule, I have 10 days to travel and hike. I had hoped to hike CT and part of MA which would be the next section for me. What I said was my goal was 100 miles and I would be...
Looking to do 100 mile section hike starting Saturday the 27th of May. I have tried the AT shuttle list for 3 days now. emails are non deliverable or no response. The phone rings but no answering or...
Mar 3-5 I did Sections 10, 11 and 12. Only saw 8 people the whole weekend on the trail. This trip was a north to south. Section 11 is dry and has lots of downed trees on the south end. It was an...
When I started hiking again in 2006 I was using my old gear. I was having a particularly rough time on a section hike and complaining about why I was having so much trouble. Some one said, sounds...
The area around Springer is interlaced with roads. This makes it easy to get to shelters and not have to hike to them. On a side note, the term Paddy comes from the Irish. Paddy wagons were the...
Great find, hope to be hiking the Sheltowee later this year
I've had a trac fone since 2007 that i got just for hiking. coverage can be spotty, i haven't gone more than 24 hours in hiking from springer to 1/2 way through New Jersey without some reception.
I shuttled with him 2 years ago, enjoyed talking with him. Some people didn't appreciate his humor, it takes all kinds of people. Curtis and family provides a great service to the trail.
Rain Man, I also have a scheduled event. I'm hiking bear mountain to DWG 7- 14 Jun. Hope to see you out there!
I used mine last month on my section hike from the James River to Dalesville. Removing the lid from my pack, i moved everything to my Ribz. It worked well as it was all there in reach. Snacks, map,...
If parking at "parking lot" at 19E be aware that is a site that sees some vandalism.
I average 17 lbs with food and water. that is the weight I'll carry so that is the weight i look at.
Nice find! Does look like a good design for slipping in a side pouch one handed. Thanks
Hot Springs to Damascus
It is not the best but this was my stops when I went through in 2010.
Harper's Ferry to Front Royal, about 55 miles. Harper's to Bear Den. Bear Den to Dick's Dome. Then into Front Royal. Maybe enough away from the crowds. Alot of people will be getting out for the...
You can walk a few miles extra and park at Standing Bear. Curtis can take you to newfound gap. that is only 2-3 days to hike.
Last June I had Curtis shuttle me to Fontana and walked back to Standing Bear. 5 days, no problems on food. It would have been easy to get a ride in either direction with all the people around at...
I carry one and find it great to keep the rain off my glasses. The attachment to the pack strap was a way to keep both hands free. It is quick to deploy when the weather plays on again off again.
Glad you had a good time outside. It was warmer here, into the 30's. The snow melted the ice was slicker. Same observation on rutted trails.
Getting to the AT. I section hike and have to get to the trail every year. NJ and NY this year, from NW TN.
that is 20's for tomorrow high and 10* tomorrow night.
