Is the general cost of the trail around 1$ per mile? I'll hopefully be doing this with my fiance. We originally planned a thru-hike for 2012/2013, but that isn't going to happen unless our plans...
I entirely agree!:)
Do you guys think that 2 people could do the trail on around $3600? That's 1800 each and neither of us plan on utilizing hostels/hotels/restaurants to save money
Trail Name: Bert & Cait
Direction: Northbound
Estimated Start Date: We are planning for Mid March I'm thinking...
This is basically going to be considered our honeymoon if we can afford it next...
Thanks Cooker, I'll look into that portion as a possibility. Is that a scenic section of the trail?
We are mainly looking for a very beautiful place to hike that is within a few states of Ohio....
Thanks for the quick replies all! :D
If there is another spot further up the trail we can possibly make our trip last a bit longer. Possibly a place that would be easier to get back to Ohio...
My girlfriend and I are looking to hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Late July into early August. Well, the portion we are looking to hike is Springer Mountain to Clingmans dome. We have...

Has anyone tried something like these? Your shoes are awesome and I'd love to make something like those mixed with these.
I like that quote.
Hi Ted.
What happened for me was just last spring (09). I went camping with a few friends, but we had to walk about a mile to our campsite. Anyway, I had an Eberlestock pack, USGI...
Sporran IIRC
I wear them on my 7-10 mile hikes... The trail isn't too rough, but it has it's moments. The real thing I notice is I need to be ready to go barefoot. I took a month and a half off from hiking due...
I wanna get one for my girlfriend... She'd get a kick out of it. lol
haha
from me, i suggest Fuel as well.
I'll take a look around. The uncoated will not have a glossy side at all will it?
aw, no! haha.
Well, I have extra uses for this stuff :) I can make a lightweight jacket for myself and girlfriend i suppose with that stuff, right? Like this?
...
I definitely will. I can't remember exactly who the vendor I'm looking at is, but I know it was someone from HF. I just hope he will still have the down and at a decent price here in a few weeks. ...
ok. I think i'm set :)
Only problem is I will need about 27oz of down for my quilts. 15.75 for my 3'' quilt and 10.5 for my 2'' quilt...
I found $6 an oz for 800 fill down. Not sure if that...
another question to satisfy my curiosity... how does one stay warm on the ground in extreme cold weather? a heavy duty pad? I have a thermarest ridgerest(regular) that seems to do the trick nicely...
nice. so here is what i changed my idea to so far. I have decently broad shoulders, so I will need 50'' width.
i want 2 quilts. Both are 50''x 78''. One will have 3'' loft the other will have...
thanks jeff.
Am I basically wasting my time by having a large, wide quilt? The more I'm reading here the more I'm thinking that's the case. I could probably get away with a quilt that will...
interesting...
So i could basically just have a quilt with no bottom and be fine? As long as I seal a little bit underneath myself on the sides...
Well. I meant to mean... I see people adding the baffle height together a lot. Say... I have a quilt with 2'' of baffle height. I double it since I will be using it as a sleeping bag.
I don't...
I want these quilts to be a bit larger so I can use them around my apt and use them as a sleeping bag on the ground, if needs be. I figured 54'' width and 78'' height should cover me, of course it's...
