Hello! It's been awhile since I posted but I wanted to come back here since the AT was my first long distance hike. Not only was it a great experience but I learned what to do and what not to do...
I'm hesitant about this comment.. I've heard of hikers becoming so run down and weak from weight loss that they just don't have it in them anymore to continue.
I fear of this.. I've been stuffing...
I wouldn't stay in the shelter on a very cold night! The floor is elevated and all you could feel was cold air coming up through the gaps in the floorboards.
Otherwise, a very nice shelter and...
This thread is similar to my thread "The Mental Game: Day by Day"...
Most of these responses just reinforce that you should take it day by day and see how it goes! Just hike.. that's it!
And...
Honestly, you can look at the pack choices until you're blue in the face.. Just do some research on what features you might like on your pack. Things like the number of pouches, how much padding...
Thanks for the heads up! A nice down or synthetic jacket was one of the few remaining things I needed to complete my list..
By reading everyone's input, I gather that different people have different mentalities on this topic.. I suppose that's just part of the HYOH thing..
I still think it's wise to acknowledge that...
When are you leaving?
It seems you have too many pants.. Keep the rain pants and also get baggy synthetic shorts or just take the excursion pants... and so there solves your shorts problem as...
I use a Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Sack 13L for my food. Call me crazy but a 4L or 5L food bad is way too small.. all those Liptons, bagels, and Snickers take up room.. ;-)
I don't see trekking poles on your list.. you're going to wish you had them... Just sayin'.
I appreciate everyone's insightful input-- I enjoy the various views on this topic.
I liked your whole post reply, but I really liked this part. :-) Thanks.
rickb, thank you so much for sharing the link to Stockdale Paradox! I will cherish this philosophic angle on my hike, as well as in my life. :)
So-- never doubt that you can and will summit...
I've been preparing and thinking about my 2011 thru hike for several months [April 1st departure]. It's not that far away..! The mental game is more of a challenge than the physical one, for me...
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do"...
Plus, go finish what you started!
Now, go hike! :)
I would just attempt to do it after college. Focus on college and all that it encompasses now. I graduated from college in May 2010 and then I started planning my thru-hike. Taking some time off...

I'll be using all of them on my thru. :-)
Well.. I am 22 and am planning my thru-hike.. My parents haven't really expressed their "security doubts" yet, and if they haven't by now, they probably won't.
Just try to involve your parent in...
There can't be two or more "most influential"s and so on Place the topics on a scale of 1-5 and rate accordingly.
I voted for headin' west and stretching your legs on the PCT!
If you have time in your distant future to do the AT again, that's fine and if not, that's fine also-- you've already done it. Most...
This made me laugh but it is SO true!!
I find that is the very reason I am out on the AT. I am out there to be challenged (physically, mentally, spiritually..). I am also out there to see what...
I spent the night here on 8-28-2010.
Brand new privy, built in 2010. Water is clean and reliable. It was an interesting location, but I didn't much like how the shelter basically sat right on a...
Hey everyone. Just got back from my section hike! I ended up choosing to get on at Millbrook-Blairstown Road and hike to Culver's Gap. Absolutely gorgeous! Just a wee bit rocky though. Even had...
I thought the campsite he mentioned was the grassy one where the houses used to be between Culver's Gap and Millbrook-Blairstown Rd.. But apparently there's another campsite closer to Sunfish Pond.....
Oh wow.. Thanks for that tip, Ernman. So the fire stretched from the grassy campsite where the houses used to be all the way down to Sunfish Pond? That's a pretty good distance and includes the...
Thanks everyone! Perrito, the grassy place where the houses used to be sounds interesting.. I'll check that out!
