Becoming Odyssa is one of my Favorites. Here's my review -- http://youtu.be/KbhziM3fN9Q
The book it hilarious, but this is what I have to say. http://youtu.be/iGiWsJOm08c
I don't think doing the approach makes much of a difference. I didn't do it, but those who did had a weird pride about it - that I found annoying. Like you're half way up the trail and people are...
That sucks! I don't think the female urinal thing is helpful. There really isn't much you can do. Just make sure you know what poison ivy looks like and you should be golden.
You can spend half as much on any bear bag and as long as you hang it each night it will work just as well.
My favorite part was Damascus to Pearisburg. I hiked this in early May when spring was just starting to emerge so everything was magical.
I have heard of a dog that died on the trail and broke his owners heart. All dogs are different. But all in all it's easier to not hike with a dog. I've heard of dogs getting lost. Parks that don't...
That's a lot of driving, and you wouldn't get the thru-hiker experiance, but yup it's possible.
if you're going to use drops just use bleach it's cheaper and does the same exact thing. Yeah I'm one who carried aqua mira but mostly just drank straight from the streams - with no regrets.
I was there last year. He will be glad to have you if you walk there. Great guy.
More then weight it takes time in the morning, but it's a nice way to warm yourself up. If you love coffee, better just keep it.
For the first half of my thru-hike I made a fire every night to cook on. It took some time, but I became skilled and carried less weight that way. There are several states up north that prohibit...
I knew a guy that carried a shovel head to give to his friend who would routinely loose his spoon. Saying "he won't be able to lose this spoon"
When you impress people with you're food
When you talk to non-trail people because you think they might give you food
When you look at a full privy and thing you can squeeze one on top
When...
I don't recommend the twenty on the second day. My second day was one of the worst, I went southbound by accident ugh. Added four more miles. I did sixteen miles in total and was dead at the end of...
Bounce boxes aren't necessarily. I did like being able to call the Post office to forward parcels. Although I ended up loosing the box.
Smaller the better trust me. it means less stuff, more miles
Lol there was this kid who thought he was having heart trouble,
because he heard a grouse making that motor noise.
He went to the doctor and was told he had an irregular heart beat!!!!
I...
Get on the trail, then come back and spend your money. I wish someone would have mentioned Ray way back packs to me before I went hiking.
Whatever dog you get just know you will be around new people all the time. All the time. So they need to be trained not to bite and or run up to people as well as bark. (I had some bad experiences)...
You could also dress up like a bear a freak people out.
For hikers there's a love hate relationship with Bill Bryson. On the one hand Bill Bryson is mentioned by so many people. Quoting stories and whatnot then you hear his book is considered fiction,...
The more you hike the more creative you get with food. Don't limit yourself the whole idea of eating 'hiker food' half way made my stomach turn sour.
Pancakes - these are fun add M&Ms - but...
No, but I thought about it after I got bitten by a centipede that was in my shoe. I turned my toe black. Of all the things you can freak yourself out over I'd say worry about the ticks. They only...
