How about use the wood and build a new shelter right on the spot with photographs inside of the old place.
One of my go to breakfasts on the trail is Nido with Captain Crunch. Good calories and almost as good as eating it with whole milk.
are you looking to resupply? Phil at 100 Mile Wilderness on Facebook does resupply's at that point. He is a three time thru hiker and can answer a lot of questions.
I did that section also in August (at least to Luray until a hurricane hit). Just keep an eye on the water reports. My second day in, I had a 13 mile water carry and the temps were in the low 90's....
This was so well done. Everything from the interviews and capturing the folksy nature of the good hearted people on the trail just made me miss it that much more. Bravo to your hard work, wonderful...
I started without them and have never regretted adding them to my kit. It is nice at the end of the day to take the shoes off and let those puppies breathe.
Right around mile 256 there is a pretty good bend in the AT north of Max Patch. there is a nice group of big trees and a rock fire ring with logs to sit on that was a cool spot. You could look...
When I went a few years ago there was a 50 year drought and I had to lug 6 liters of water in from Fontana. We stayed at the Molly Ridge shelter which was around 12 miles in. The first running...
I actually considered something similar. I was going to start north from Springer in the fall (end of September through when it starts to get really cold, maybe November), get as far as I can and...
If you continue north on the AT through Max Patch and take that to the bottom of the hill through the woods, there is a very nice camp site with some trees. Water is available maybe .4 from the...
I have hiked in the 100 mile wilderness in early July and came across the most mosquitoes I have ever seen in my life. Fortunately for me, all my clothes were treated with permethrin prior to my...
It is called a rat sack. They are recommended in the Grand Canyon. I have used one. It isn't quite as big as a conventional food bag. I don't think they are worth the extra weight, but here is a...
On my last hike, I saw a guy walking almost dressed like a wizard with a staff. He was collecting acorns in a mason jar. After conversing with him for a couple minutes, he was definitely out there.
I carried one on the JMT due to regulations in the national parks. I used the Lighter 1 Big Daddy. The lid of the Big Daddy doubles as a cook pot that you can cook or boil water in. In hindsight,...
From the Smokies to Erwin, I don't recall a shelter area that did not have bear cables. To each their own, but it seems a whole lot easier to hang your food in a tree, or (while not suggested, but...
How is the water situation between Standing Bear Farm and Erwin looking? Are any of the reliable sources in AWOL's guide no longer there? What seems to be the longest stretches without water? ...
Does anyone know if Uber or Lyft is pretty reliable in Erwin, TN? I am ending a section hike there and want to make sure if I request and Uber or Lyft to get to the Asheville airport there will...
You took the words right out of my mouth. Lifetime warranty.
packing too much food and too much gear
I agree that southbound will be easiest. Bugs are very bad in June/July. I would spray all your clothes with permethrin and bring a head net for some of the lower lying areas. Expect few...
I have croc knock offs called Waldies. Not sure where they came from, but I bought them at Mountain Crossings.
Have you guys tried bagging your own in liter freezer ziplock bags from the #10 cans? I have done that. It is an economical way to buy Mountain House.
I buy saline eye drops at the drug store and dump the water out. Then pull the cap off and refill with whatever you want to put in it. Put the dropper cap back on and then the screw cap.
I just stuff mine into a ziplock bag. I use z-line that seems less likely to tangle than para cord.
