I was hiking in CT near the NY boarder last week and the snow was fairly deep at higher elevation (approaching Bear MT.. The CT one).
If I had to wager, I would say that there may be some snow...
Check out TarpTent!
Great quality, great value, light weight... You will never talk to someone who owns a tarptent and is not happy with it.
I will reiterate what others have already said.
Don't wait for someone else. Live your life, chase your adventures and do all the things you want to do. Maybe you will find someone along the way....
I did this hike with my father and brother at the end of June which was just crazy hot!
If your use to hiking in Maine and New Hampshire, you'll love this! Switch backs!!!! But you are pretty...
I switched to a Hammock for hiking the LT. The ground gets awfully muddy and there are plenty of trees around. I have never used my hammock without a pad, even in the summer, simply because if your...
I've used my hammock down to about 20 degrees w/ just a sleeping pad. If you roll off the pad, it gets awful cold. I wouldn't invest in under quilt personally. It's not going to be all that cold.
I just bought an Ursack S29. It's bear proof and rodent proof. Two birds with one stone!
Honestly that was just rude. I have been on this Forum for a few years now and Connie's insight is always helpful and appreciated. She has a well run website and really knows what she is talking...
I think I shared a shelter with this guy in CT on an October night in 2010. I was doing a quick section and got to the MT. Algo Shelter just before sun down. I set up shop and was almost asleep when...
My advice would be to take 2 weeks off and go down to Georgia in April or May. If after two weeks you can't think of anything else besides a thru, then be ready leave your job and search for new...
I don't think you tried that hard, lol.
I did meet people who went shelterless on the LT. I don't think it's as irresponsible as everyone makes it seems. The OP has thru-hiked twice so it's not...
Aren't you supposed to make a tourniquet and suck on the bight mark until you get all the venom out?
Was that Rambow?
I wouldn't worry about it. I walked by a rattle snake in Canyonlands and...
Thank you for posting that Scotty.
What an amazing story!
Thanks Stud, I will email her tonight!
You make it sound so easy! Thanks
Hello,
I'm looking to do a section hike w/ my father and brother in Shenandoah. They aren't exactly experienced backpackers so I was thinking something easier. I'm looking at going from Route 33...
I met a man in his mid 60's hiking South Bound after recovering from years of Chemo.
His trail name was "miserable old bastard" and his persona was true to form. He complained about every root,...
I hate hanging and I don't want to carry the weight, so I just purchased an Ursack!
I'm pumped, I haven't bought a new piece of gear in a few years so I can't wait to play with it.
It's peace...
In my 400+ miles on the AT and (almost) the entire LT, I've never had even a hint of trouble. Just use common sense. Once I got to a shelter and there was a guy that made me a little uneasy, so I...
I agree with all of the positives the Scouts bring. Like I've said, I've seen a lot of good from them. Any group that provides structure and guidance to children and teaches them about the outdoors...
Soumodeler -
That was a very eloquent and well thought out response. I don't disagree with anything you've said and I'm sure practices vary from troop to troop. I also know a lot of really good...
I know there are a number of former and current boy scouts on this thread and I don't mean to offend anyone, but I have seen a number of poor practices from boy scouts.
From simple things like...
I met a lot of people who hiked the LT with no shelter. Now, there are less people on the LT and shelters every 5 to 10 miles so they are more likely to get a shelter.
A couple of young ladies...
I'm really shocked at some of the comments on this thread. I have to believe people are just trying get others riled up.. It would be comical, if we weren't talking about a 65 year old women getting...
