Sometimes the white blazes are not as well marked as you would think. I didn't carry a guide. I printed on a piece of paper the mile markers from Summit post for whatever section I was doing and used...
The only times that I haven't hung my food on the AT, I slept with it. Never once was I harassed by even the smallest creature. If you cant find a place to hang your bag, you may have picked a bad...
Always bear bag instead of canister unless you are required to use canister. On the AT you can hike through most of the bear can areas so it's not an issue.

Seriously.... just thumb a ride.
I had someone offer me a ride when I sat down for a drink after coming up over the hill to Newfound. Don't pay..... there's only one way down into Gatlinburg from...
Interesting..... some hikers could be pushing close to there if they started earlier in the year.

I was in Yosemite last October, which is their lighter season. Glacier point was packed...
Ugh... missed the southern California part.... hmmm check out Joshua Tree.
Tahoe Rim trail.
Just go Springer to Neels Gap.
Perfect hike.... ends with Blood Mountain, views, and then a victory snack at Mountain Crossings. Can get Hiker Hostel to shuttle you cheaply.
