Let's look at what wilderness means

If you look at the definition of "wilderness"

" A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his works...

    Been there, done that

My National Geo Map shows just under 3.5 miles from the parking area of Cosby Campground to the Cosby Knob Shelter. I've done the hike up the Low Gap Trail twice, and it's no picnic, but it's pretty...

  7. Follow up to the original question

There is plenty of parking at Wayah Gap, where a gravel road leads up from Highway 1310 (ie, Wayah Road) to Wayah Bald and the tower located there. However, I'll try to prevent the slight confusion I...

    Update

As of 2021 July 8, this shelter is in pretty good shape, including its moat. No major trash issues, and the low level of graffiti surprised me. Water was flowing fine.

    As of now

As of 2021 July 7, the "moat" is still there, and I came close to falling into it when I wasn't paying attention.

    More info

    Update on both shelters:
As of July 6 & 9, both shelters are in quite good shape, trash-wise.
Water is flowing well at Cable Gap, and probably at Sassafras as well. I didn't check the latter's...

Stayed there in June of 2021

Water is flowing fine, about .2 of a mile south of the Shelter. Only a few bear cables are presently usable. Privy is behind the shelter.
Overall, pretty average for a shelter.

    Update

As of mid-June of this year, all water sources listed in Guthooks are flowing fine. I had no problems getting water at any designated water source.

    Follow up

As of June 14 of this year, the water at Cold Spring Shelter is flowing quite well, right out of the pipe.
  14. Probably no answer at all

People who have survived suicide attempts will tell it is meaningless to ask questions along the lines of, "Who in their right mind would do that?" or "What is the logic in doing that?" The simple...
  15. A flaw in your logic

This is plain wrong. Bear spray is NOT a repellent, it's an irritant. In the same way that chili powder makes bland food SMELL better but is NOT something you'd want in your eyes, the red pepper oil...

No worry about ticks in PA?

    > I don't think you have to seriously worry about ticks in PA

As someone who got Lyme Disease while doing a day hike in Pennsylvania, I respectfully disagree.

    I use the Ursack

For me, that it's main feature. Even with perfect conditions -- trees nearby, with branches at just the right height -- I couldn't do a PCT hang if my life depended on it. Much easier to just tie up...

This video visit from January of last year
