Does anyone have any experience with the lumbar style day packs? I've had multiple surgeries in each shoulder and they have been flaring up lately. It looks like this might be a good solution for day...

When the temps get into the 20's and 30's I struggle with what to wear on my head. Typically, when the weather is that chilly, I am only out for day hikes.
I've tried just a bandanna (stops...
Use whatever you like. My local hikes are through some state hunting lands so i stick with orange for day pack, big pack, etc....
The new shelter is great. It has a nice covered section with benches and a picnic table, a large sleeping area with a nice loft for more space. It's really a great spot. I was there a few weeks...
This is awesome, thank you. I can't wait to read them.
I prefer SOBO but have done it both ways multiple times. Heading S. from Blackburn you will have 4-5 miles of ridgeline and pretty easy hiking. After Raven's Rocks, which has a great view, you will...
in case anyone is thinking of stopping by - the creek in front of the shelter is still running and is a fine water source. The spring is dry, as mentioned above, but I didn't want someone to not go...
Awesome - it really is a fun hike (to me). You start with several miles of ridgewalking and then hit a few roller coaster bumps that include a great view. I live quite close to Snickers Gap. Feel...
If you didn't mind a little extra driving (not much) you could get a pretty nice 7.5 miles from Blackburn S. to Snickers Gap that would include the view from Raven's Rocks.
My schedule has changed this year and I am going to be able to get out for 3-4 hour day-hikes during the week this fall and winter.
Due to scheduling (and kids :-) I don't get out very often in...
Thanks, I know about the rut but had never seen a mark like this. Pretty awesome!
AS long as it doesn't want to mate :-)
You know what they say about big feet......big socks, big...
I stumbled upon this strange print this evening on the AT. It was located in the roller coaster between Rt. 605 and Rod Hollow shelter.
I suspect there are multiple "swipes" going on in this...
I agree that it seems a little easier NOBO.
However, the middle point would be much closer to the Sam Moore shelter, about 3m S. of Bears Den. After Bears Den, you have 3m of rollercoaster...
This is correct.
I spend an awful lot of time between Manassas Gap and Harpers Ferry on the AT. The roller coaster isn't as bad as people make it out to be, but you will be hiking it during the...
What distance and what challenge are you looking for for the day hike? I live about 30 minutes from Harp and am on the AT all the time in this area. I am happy to steer you towards something that...
That's me...
I'm glad you had a great trip.
Perhaps on another trip, in the same area, there is an awesome campground .5m S. of Rt. 605 (the gravel road between Snickers Gap and Ashby Gap...
Sounds like a great trip. I'm pretty sure I crossed paths with both of you on the blue blazed trail heading to/from Blackburn. I was walking uphill to get back to the AT after a lunch break and...
I've decided to try pacer poles after reading through this forum.
Has anyone tried the 2 pc. version that is bottom half - carbon, top half aluminum? It is a bit heavier then the 3 pc. all...
Thank you for the replies so far. I appreciate it. I hadn't thought of things in terms of rotational inertia, but it makes sense. I also had not heard of the black diamond "donut" but will look...
I am thinking about getting a set of carbon poles. I have a shoulder that has been rebuilt twice and can get a little cranky at times. I'm wondering if the "dead" feel of carbon in other sports...
I would like to dayhike a section of the AT from S. of Dick's Dome North to Ashby Gap.
Is anyone familiar with a day-lot or trailhead to either leave a car S. of Dick's or get dropped off and...
I'm not that familiar with the section from Harpers Ferry to I-70 to remember. However, from Ashby Gap to HF there are plenty of nice tent camp sites along the way that are located between shelters....
Nope, other then feeling silly using it at about 5% capacity. Maybe that I might not have enough inside to secure it, but I doubt that is a big deal.
If it is comfy and has a decent...
It isn't specifically the width, but it seems a wider width then the single 1" wide pc of fabric leads to greater comfort and more load transfer to the hips instead of it just being there for...
It seems with packs that small, unless you are a champ with a sewing machine (I'm not), probably not.
