Hear, hear.
Also... I was thinking earlier today about how businesses might be even less inclined to allow backpacks inside since the Boston marathon bombings. It sounds irrational but I can see someone going...
I can't even imagine, that's awful. It's a good reminder to the rest of us but really how many of us even think twice about leaving a pack in a shelter while we get water? I guess I'll be changing my...
(I know that's far off the CT but this seemed the most relevant forum, mods please move if I'm wrong)
I plan on doing some hiking near Aspen in September. I want to go into town for a mail drop...
Does the thread title make anyone else think of the song, "Strangers In The Night?"
If it's likely to freeze overnight don't leave the pee bottle outside or you'll be stuck carrying around a bottle of frozen pee the next day until it melts and you can dump it.
I hope I won't need to carry either but the tread on my shoes this year really sucks.

Set aside some time at the end of each day to do static stretches of your major muscle groups. (Actually, everyone should do this.)
I've never used any kind of rain pant or skirt. Just a pack cover/rain jacket combo.
Thanks, handlebar. I've been debating whether or not I'll need my YaxTrax, or something else, like minispikes. I guess we'll just have to keep watching the weather and wait and see.
handlebar - what kind of footwear did you use on that CDT hike? 1 mph days... I know what that's like. Do you have any other recommendations for a snowy CT start?
My Golite Gust is 5000+ cu in (80+ liters) and weighs 22 ounces.
I'm expecting snow. I've been watching the snow levels carefully. Hopefully there won't be a lot of it but that's when I have time to do the hike so I'll take whatever comes. I don't mind hiking in...
Looks like the middle of June for me.
karnak - they will hold it. I usually address it like this (same for mail drops and bounce box):
General Delivery
Townname, State ZIP
Please hold for Colorado Trail thru hiker
Sometimes I...
I was never able to get warm enough to be comfortable in my Hennessy. I had to finally admit hammocking was not for me.
I've done a bounce box for most of my long hikes. This summer I'm sending a bounce box to Breckenridge, Salida, Silverton and Durango. I send it to the post office, use what I need, then re-address...
I'm a night owl by nature and I love night hiking. Go for it.
I nearly collided with black bears in the A.T. twice. Once a cub ran into the trail out of tall brush about three feet in front of me. I was walking at a good clip and nearly stepped on the cub, who...
Prayers on their way for all those affected.
I can't imagine not brushing with toothpaste. Like Sara, I've been through a root canal so I'm fastidious about dental hygiene.
I have a Marmot Plasma +15. I love it. It's the Mercedes Benz of sleeping bags, pure luxury. Plenty of room and I'm a big guy.
I wear trail runners and still use hiking socks and sock liners.
I always use a bounce box on long hikes but not for extra food. I usually share that with whoever else was around or leave it in a hiker box. If there's no other option, I throw it away although I...
