Don't taze me Ranger-bro!
My experience heading SOBO from Katahdin in 2007 and 2008, both in June: The blackflies are annoying, but manageable with deet; I had a headnet, but chose not to use it; didn't bring it the second...
I understand that hurricane season is not yet over and there are still two months to go until January, but does anyone know whether this has been an average, wet or dry year in Florida to date?...
Thanks lilricky, that's a super-tempting offer. I'm pretty set on doing a purist hike, but if I change my mind or my body changes it for me I appreciate the offer.
What do you think, that is...
Cool, what do think?
The new Canon Powershot S100 (the upgrade of the S95) is coming out this November. Trail photo enthusiasts who don't want to tote around a dSLR set up may want to take a long hard look at this...
Thanks WingedMonkey for the heads-up. It's nice to get current info on the trail. I'll plan on the Western route for Okeechobee. I appreciate the downside of the long road walk heading West around...
Nice! Hope to see you guys out there. I am ordering my thru hiker packet today. I think my start date is looking to be around January 8-10th. Currently planning on the Western route around Orlando....
When is this supposed to happen? Thanks.
I am considering a 2012 FT thruhike beginning in early January, if everything comes together. Any FT thruhikers out there?
Hiked with warraghiyagey a bit back in 2007. Hope he has a great hike. I'll be heading out behind him in July. Hearing that the hunt is open makes me anxious to leave.
"Pano"
It allows you to take panoramic photos with your iphone. It's really a pretty sweet app.
Fritos also double as an emergency fire starter. They burn like a wick.
The only thing you accomplish by hauling a full pack up Katahdin as a SOBO is to increase your chance of injury. It would suck to have your hike end before it has even started.

Consider two gatorade bottles instead of nalgenes. They are just as functional, plenty durable and weigh almost nothing, relative to a nalgene bottle. Plus, you can replace them periodically with...
I'm going to be Sobo a couple weeks behind you. Look brother/sister, you can do whatever you think is best for you, but in my opinion you really should think about cutting this list down a bit.
I...
For this year's hikers who are interested, I just checked with WHL and they will be open for the season beginning on Memorial Day weekend.
SOBO resupply is quite achievable through the Wilderness. I carried five days of food (1 day for Katahdin plus 4 days to WHL) and even cheated by grabbing a burger at Abol Bridge store. Then I...
I've hiked the 100 Mile Wilderness twice now and I can tell you that this is absolutely not true. You will encounter mud and lots of it, sometimes knee deep or more in boggy areas, to which those...
Nothing against external frame packs, but find an outfitter and try some different packs, you may find that an internal frame is more comfortable. You're not going to be carrying THAT much extra...
A lot of people seem to like the Keen Targhee or Voyager, which seem to fit your description nicely.
Ditto on the Dirty Girl Gaiters.
