Haven't been out that way since September. Last fill up before West Mountain was the rest stop on the Pallisades. It was super dry. Hopefully better with the weather we've had.

I only drink black coffee so I think I'm leaning towards using a press. Haven't made coffee on any shorter trips, but I'm not sure tea will cut it on my thru.
I have Sprint now and I'm up for an upgrade/contract renewal. I'll have to shop around a bit. I left Verizon to save money and keep unlimited data. I need to find a balance between coverage and cost...
Just this past summer I was hiking Breakneck and was approached by a woman hiking without a pack. She just had one small water bottle (16oz or so). She also had three young boys (under 12) with her...
Thank you, Rafe! I will definitely send him random pix along the way. I'll have to check my cell carrier's service coverage. Any idea if there is a provider that works better than others along the...
I meant from the back. The top of the shelter was pretty rough before they fixed it.
If someone gets up there before me can you post a pic of the new roof?
GoldenBear, What you recommend sounds very close to what we have planned so far. His biggest concern was that I'd be hikibg alone if I got injured. I now have a friend going with me so I think that...
Not that this would only apply to women, but has anyone thru hiked while leaving a significant other at home? I'm sure people do it all the time. I'm thru hiking the AT with a friend next spring and...
The one in East Hanover, NJ was outside and people set up everything they could get their hands on. Pads were inflated. Tents set up. The one in Paramus on Saturday was in a small section of their...
They told us we couldn't at this one. They let us test stuff at the last one I went to too.
Had much better luck showing up late to the last one in East Hanover...and I just realized I was not at the same store. Lol. Nevermind.
I almost bought a fly creek ul2, but couldn't pull the trigger without knowing it's state. There were a pair of men's Solomons I liked but would have been snug with thicker socks. Got some clearance...
Looks good! They were tearing the roof off of it when I camped there about a month ago. It looks much better. Glad it finally got the much needed attention :)
You mean you would rather hike than attend the best Sheep & Wool festival around?? Lol
Thanks! I may look into that. I have blister issues with kayaking as well, but always figured it was just because my hands are wet and softer because of it. I'm thinking that I won't be using them...
I picked up a pair of black diamond poles at an REI garage sale for around $40-50. They have flip locks and wrist straps. They are my first pair and I've only used them once so far. They did rub a...
Well I planned a solo hike all along, but it looks lile I may be starting with some company. Not sure how serious he is. I'm still preparing as if I am going it totally alone in case he doesn't come...
This is what I assumed was the case. I worked in and around Fahenstock all summer, but was never near any trails or campsites (monitoring forestry inventory plots) so I never got the chance to ask....
I pretty much figure that if it's going to help me complete the trail in some way it's worth at leaat considering the extra weight. I have a pad that I got a good deal on, but it's a little heavier...
Last I checked you needed a permit to camp in Fahenstock too. I don't know the exact details since I didn't make it that far last weekend. Maybe people generally hike through and don't stay there?
The scouts aren't what they were when I was younger. The guys I know that went through back then are way more knowledgeable about camping and survival. Even if they haven't used the skills since, ...
I've heard the Greenwood Lake/Port Jervis area is nice. I've spent time in the area, but never hiked it. I will have to add it to my list :)
It takes some detective work, but if you can find a rental place that has a car from down south they sometimes give you a better rate for returning it for them. Just a thought.
PS I don't feel a difference in temp when on my belly vs my back/side.
