All the varying responses about the same trail seem to indicate you do have to factor in weather, time of year, and really what just plain bothers you when hiking. I've hiked the Long Trail...
It's been seven months since I've been on this site and this thread title caught my eye because I did actually live on the trail during a fall semester at a branch campus of Penn State in Mont Alto,...
Damn, I must be a real badass because I don't treat my water or wash my hands while I'm on trail. Haven't filtered my water since I was a 12-year-old boy scout that preferred drinking clean, stream...
It was only a week ago and a night I won't forget.
Is the Scoutmaster named Ryan? He was one of the most friendly people I've met ontrail or off. I wasn't carrying a tent at the time because I hadn't shared a shelter with anyone for weeks, and he...
Canister fuel is pretty accessible along the trail. I hiked from Katahdin to the James River this fall/winter and the only time I really had trouble was in Front Royal. The outfitter there only...
I'm glad the scout troop was there because they let me camp and share their fire with them that night. What was the name of the newspaper?
I appreciate the encouragement, but I feel no responsibility for that man's decision and it wasn't very traumatizing at all. It was just one of those experiences that got the wheels turning in my...
Friday night. I believe the sheriffs dept. from Amherst County as well as officers from the NPS and VA Game Commission responded.
I recently aborted a winter sobo thru-hike at the US 501 road-crossing in Virginia after finding a dead body at Punchbowl Shelter. The man set up his tent inside the shelter, got in his sleeping...
You'll be alright in New York in the winter. I was there around Thanksgiving time and from Bear Mountain through New Jersey, I was walking through snow the whole time and didn't have a problem doing...
I've changed my mind on the cog. My dad works in a coal burning power plant and he said on an average DAY 150,000 tons of coal was burned. Using the online schedule for the cog, I calculated it...
Sorry. My above post was meant to quote this entry not the one I actually quoted above.
This could be Just Jack or the guy he's hiking with. They're about the only thru-hikers I've been seeing in the registers as I've progressed south, and I know they both flip-flopped. Other than...
The cog is exempted from New Hampshire's air pollution laws which regulate coal burning plants.
The cog burns an entire ton of coal and uses a 1,000 gallons of water per one way trip. It also...
Wow. I think I'll send my warmer sleeping bag to Gorham instead of Hanover like I originally planned. Thanks for the link.
Thanks for the info, everyone. I found a weather link at the Baxter State Park website and apparently there are frost advisorys for much of Maine in the next couple of nights so I'll take some...
I'm heading to Maine in two days to start a southbound and I was wondering if I am going to need some cold weather gear. It's been fairly cool here in Pennsylvania the past week and I can see it...
I didn't plan on spending a week hiking because I don't think I have that kind of time. The Loyalsock Trail is only 59-60 miles and I was thinking about doing all of that or most of that in 3-4 days.
Thinking about a winter hike on the Mid-State Trail near State College or the Loyalsock Trail during winter break. Not sure about New Years.

I bought both the guide books and Yogi's book but only took Yogi's book and the data book. I figured if I had problems losing the trail I could have someone mail me the pages but I only ever lost the...
I hiked the PCT in 2004 and never had a problem not using a cannister. I never hung my food either.
Found the answer to my question. Thought I had already subscribed to it.
Where did the other long trails forum go?
HAHAHAAHAHHAA My, how these threads degenerate. :datz :datz :datz :datz :datz
