Problem solved by a change of plans.
Thanks, everyone.
(Mods, feel free to tank this thread.)
I'm looking for a ride back to Kent from where the AT crosses Route 7 south of Great Barrington next Saturday (April 9, 2011), early afternoon. Mapquest puts the trip at about 40 miles and about an...
The cycle they're caught in is a wash cycle and they're guaranteed to get washed.
I'm about to go out for a week down south where I might meet some and I'm fairly certain the thru hikers likely...
Used a Precip since 2005 in AT hiking.
Doesn't really breathe well (but what effective rain gear does?).
Great for a wind breaker.
Great for a top layer in cold weather and/or in camp after and...
Somebody is sugaring in the trail corridor?
Is that allowed?
And will they drop the price of the TP when they drop the center tubes?
Oh no, oh nosiree.
SNP isn't all that exciting.
Absolutely go to Grayson Highlands.
The only thing a Spot tracking device tells them is the last place you were before you got dismembered by the crazy hill people.
If you met such a person (and I have), you could ask him yourself.
However, sometimes it's best not to ask about such things.
A man's TP load is a very personal and private matter.
(Hint: The...
All the ridge mountains up and down the southern part of Shenandoah Nat. Park were frosted white in the sunshine this morning after a day of rain. It was an impressive and majestic sight. I thought I...
I can see that.
I give my TP roll a smoosh to flatten it out when I pack it then I just let it take care of itself.
However, the ounces do add up and the bulk does multiply, especially when...
My poop kit consists of a gallon Ziplock that contains a roll of TP, a pack of Wet Ones antibacterial wipes and a small bottle of Purell or equivalent. The TP tube poses no burden for me.
The...
FWIW, I never take the tube out of my TP roll when I hike.
I suppose I could, but why?
;-)
The paper companies are also making the rolls narrower and claiming more sheets per package of TP.
Our house was built in 2005 and the TP rolls are now about an inch narrower than the TP holders....
Because life is all about chasing and spending and getting the money, of course, right?
Nothing is more antithetical to that mindset than hiking the AT.
Loincloth, Buck knife, plastic water bottle is all you really need.
The various data books and maps just about never match in mileages.
This includes signs on the trail, as well.
I suppose you could average them all to get a good figure?
I carried Vermont cheddar in the south in March.
Had no trouble with it going bad -- it never had time.
Great on crackers!
"Alak, the regime has no need for jesters. They just don't "help."

Very unnecessary.
Hang your pack and food from a mouse hanger.
No need to overreact!
Three days is no time.
Don't sweat it and enjoy the downtime!
I've been snowed on and frozen south of Harpers Ferry in April and cooked in 80-degree heat in NY in April. It's the transitional season, so expect anything. A hat to keep the sun off is recommended,...
spelling is Watauga, btw. whoops.
The AT goes around the west side of Wautauga Lake in TN about 30 miles south of Damascus, VA., and there's a shelter there, too.
Wautauga Lake Shelter.
24 pictures per segment, one segment per day.
I hiked with Fester in Vermont for a short way in 05.
