I used the pump at Blue Mountain Road about 3 weeks ago.. maybe it was 4. It takes fast furious pumping but oh, the water was so cold and good.. I poured it all over myself before setting off.
Saw...
i guess there is little that can contaminate someone who lives in Jersey. Maybe Martian bugs that don't know Jersey? I'll stop worrying as well.
i think the wallet, wallpaper and raingear ideas are really amazing..
I'd buy several of each!
I can't get the wallet out of my mind.. I love those tyvek maps..
does anyone else get a...
I'm dehydrating lots of food my upcoming thru-hike (of a different shorter trail).
I find it very convenient to put single-serving sized toothpaste dots on some baking paper and put it in the...
huh.. i got the hiker instead of the hiker pro to save some $$.. guess it was a good choice.
thanks for the tip.
I've read these two complaints a lot about the popular Katadyn water filter,:
1. the inlet knob (that the inlet hose connects to) breaks off easily, often when you remove or connect the inlet hose...
I looked more carefully through a couple of segments of the guidebook, with the Trails Illustrated map and databook in front of me.
The guidebook occasionally notes that an intersection is not...
Mags obviously knows a lot more about this than I do , especially since I haven't started my CT hike yet (next month).
So far, I have the guidebook, databook and many Trails Illustrated maps.

You really aren't taking a personal risk by being careless with bear bagging -- you are putting the rest of us and wildlife at risk. Go on like this and soon it'll be like Europe with no wildlife...
to extend that, would overnight lows in august on the CT (esp. near San Juan) be ~ 25 - 40 perhaps?
I looked up overnight lows in silverton and other towns but figure the mtns are quite a bit...
We hiked in arctic norway last year and they were reasonably easily available -- i.e each of the 4 - 5 outdoor stores we entered had canisters.
i seem to recall that they didn't have a wide...
As someone who hasn't spent much time in Colorado in the summer, the lightning danger advisories seem a bit mysterious.
I'm planning a CT hike this August and was just poring over the TI maps of...
Two of us will be starting out from Denver in late july as well! Maybe we'll see you on the trail .. we'll be taking the early days easy though with the elevation and all.
I used to only use iodine in the past and am not picky about the taste.. but I agree ClO2 is far better in taste.
Surprisingly, my hiking partners seem to dislike the familiar swimming-pool smell...
Has anyone used either Iodine tablets or Chlorine dioxide (Aquamira tablets etc) as water treatment for a thru-hike or a hike longer than a month?
I'm going on a 5 week hike (Colorado Trail) and...
Thanks for the (encouraging) reply!
I hear the PA AT is far worse than NJ but man, those rocks can really cut your feet up.. I really hope I can look up and around more while hiking in Colorado...
Should add that I feel that walking uphill on that treadmill is the most useful thing I'm doing.. I get small pains in my feet and various parts of my leg that seem to heal and hopefully strengthen...
I have a similar question.. I live in NJ and my CT hike is just about 4 weeks away. I am 27 and about 140 lbs.
I did 35 miles on the NJ AT last weekend with a 25 lb pack.. 12 miles on Saturday +...
I think everyone should subscribe to this magazine. It's just about the only mag dedicated to backpacking. Yes they make LOTS of compromises but people need to realize the difficulty of catering to...
Looks like your suggestion of Elk Park is pretty much a portion of the CT.. Elk Park to Molas Pass and so on sounds pretty good. I'll look into it. I remember having looked at the website you...
My girlfriend would like to join me for 4 - 5 days at the end of my CT thru' hike, in late August, near Durango / Silverton. I think I'll be there in the last week of August.
My default plan was...
I've been investigating almost this same exact question for my thru-hike of the Colorado trail later this year.
The options I have so far are:
1. DriDucks jacket (6 oz, $20 including pants) + 3...
What kind of camera works better on a long / thru hike with resupply about once in 5 - 7 days?
Cameras with AA batteries?
or cameras with those proprietary rechargeable cells that you need an...
