Thanks all! One of those options will certainly work. BTW, we just moved our trip left from Late October to late September. Long story. Might be easier to find rides in late September too.
...
thanks traveler! I have two backups now, cool. My wife is looking forward to finishing her AT hike in good old Connecticut! Nothing too exciting, like Katahdin, but it will be a pleasant (and...
Yep, when I did a little research this morning, I read in a couple places that the West Elk wilderness was the LEAST visited wilderness in the state. I'm going to make it a point to get into there...
I have never hiked those trails, sorry, I won't be much direct help.
Looking on COTREX, there are no comments for 450 or 441, but there is one for 840, might not apply, but it says the "southern...
Late summer through mid fall, best time in so many places. We basically hike (or bike) all of September and October, somewhere. Some years we get lucky and create a trip Down Under and we double...
thanks! I'll pay well, of course. I'll keep shopping and holler if I get stuck.
Excellent tip, thanks. Good old Guthooks! didn't think to look there.
funny, I didn't try Carl yet, but I will now, thanks.
I can certainly try to answer any questions, but it has been a few years since I was last in the West Elks. We tend to drive a lot on both sides (north/south) of the West Elks.
Holler away, I'll...
I'm striking out with the AT shuttle list, I sent 5 requests 4-5 days ago, only got one response (a "no").
I need a ride from some some Avis car return near the NJ/NY border to an AT road crossing...
Try freeze dried eggs rehydrated/warm, then wrap them in a tortilla and gently fry in butter in a small skillet. Add salsa. Wow. Our favorite "splurge" breakfast, when we feel like carrying the 6...
Also, the CO 14er's initiative folks have no right telling hikers what to do, they have zero jurisdiction. Yeah, they do good work, but should not be telling hikers what to do. I suppose nicely...
There are a bunch of "privately owned" 14ers and 13ers, most are "open to the public" though, thankfully. The Bross situation started quite a few years ago, I believe right after the Wilson Peak...
I did about 2/3rds of the BMT a couple of Octobers ago, and it was a bit tough to follow in places. I was sure glad to have the Guthook track on my phone. Maybe it's easier to follow in the summer...
Just yet another data point: I've carried one (the light Go-lite silver one) on many hikes and have appreciated having it, but mostly for sun protection (PCT, CDT, CT), but it sure is nice as well...
Thanks for the tip on your website; my wife and I need a shuttle from Asheville to Hot Springs (in late May), and have contacted Harry at Asheville Airport shuttles.
Decent article, thanks for sharing.
The obvious key is *don't* become an "ex-thru hiker" !!! This might sound silly, but I mean it. Unless you're severely injured or very, very old, why would...
these are my thoughts as well, and thanks for providing that other N=1 study...
Remember the OP article says "suggests", it draws no conclusions. I think the OP article is great, er, food for...
Since this is the UL forum and not the "hiking humor" forum, and all joking aside (and I love post #8), I do think it is actually possible to "save weight" with proper App management... Not sure...
Certainly in so many ways, John Muir was The Man, and we should all be very grateful of his magnificent efforts.
It saddens me, however, that after his failure to stop the building of the Hetch...
Sorry for the divergence.... anyway, yeah, those are good, except I never tried Barefoot Sisters. I think it was "walking with spring" that really got me to actually hike the AT.
Have you read...
Yeah, that is unfortunate.
But he does narrate a bunch of his other books in full; I've read a half dozen BB books, here they are in order of my enjoyment:
A Brief history of Nearly Everything...
this is great info BD, thanks for sharing. This is one important aspect of long distance backpacking that I've neglected; I get by somehow, but could do so much better. Again, thanks, I'll take a...
Yikes, I guess I'm the world's worst "fat burner" because those ratios aren't even close for me (we're all different!) I hike with about 30/30/40 (F/P/C), but I do manage about 135 cal/oz including...
Yikes, they did change that thing! I guess to accommodate the "pump sack" that's included now. On that note, I watched the little video for the neoair on REI.com, and one key statement at the end,...
