I think the brand you are referring to is Energizer. I have the same one. Same set of batteries has been going through 4 campouts with scouts and a week of scout summer camp.
Exactly. So far everyone has some good ideas. I went by Outdoor Provisions Company and got the map Lone Wolf suggested. I'll scope out some possible loop hikes. Where are the open balds and ponies...
Is there anyone that can recommend a hike for in the Grayson Highlands/Mt Rogers area for scouts aged 14-16 for a weekend trip? Either a good route description or map would be very much appreciated.
I've been using Faststone Image Viewer for awhile http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm with excellent results. I also second the Picassa recommendation
I've got a Go-Cot http://www.campingcot.com/ that weighs ~8.5 lbs and packs down to a 2' x 5" package. Maybe not quite backpackable but really comfortable.
Any of these NC State Parks http://149.168.1.195/act/findPub.php
Roughly:
1 - 5 miles
2 - 4.75 miles
3 - 4.75 miles
4 - Black Balsam to parking lot on the side road from the Blue Ridge Parkway is ~1 mile
total = ~16 miles from one end to the other
Make sure you add Tennet Mtn and Balsam Mtn to the route for some awsome views. They're over 6k each.

Yup, love the area. Son and I did the Balsam mtn, Tenet mtn, Investor Gap, Greasy Cove (a real knee killer going down!) up the trail that connects Greasy Cove to the MTS/Graveyard Ridge and back to...
Well there's the first problem. BSA rules for Cubs is that a parent must attend the outing with the son. Doesn't have to be dad only.
Alcohol is also expressly forbidden at scouting events. I...
I THINK, not sure, lost the notes I made, & mine is HEAVILY modified, the SG 12 x 12 weighs around 3 Lbs. Modified to a MacCat type with a 13' ridgeline & 5' sides, all extra ties removed, mine now...
I've got one of these tarps and would love to modify it as you did. Got a picture of it?
Nescafe Clasico now comes in those single serve "tubes". Really tastes like fresh brew.
I don't know... All this old fashioned camping gear. I found this works well on the trail so I can have my muffins with my fresh perked coffee...

Most grocery stores have a side cutting opener, about $8. Cutts the can top open by splitting the rolled rim giving you a top that can be put back on like a pot lid but is not sharp on the edges. I'd...
That's Dri-Ducks http://www.froggtoggs.com/catalog/2009catalog/rainwear/page46-47.asp
Anyone try Frogg Toggs Dr-Ducks? Their ads claim it to be 10.4 ounces so I would think that's pretty light. I have their regular raingear and it's definately dry but it doesn't pack down very small....
I love fresh brewed but I got to admit that I've found a really good instant. Nescafe Classico. Found it at Target in the mexican found section. Most of the label is in spanish so I'm guessing that...
My son and I hiked up there lst weekend as well. I ran into one of the camp instructors and asked him about the camp closing. He said they never closed and so far all sessions have run a expected....
