In my experience carbon poles w/o "shock absorbers" are plenty comfortable and much more quiet than aluminium poles &/or poles w/shock absorber. The ones that have flick locks are far easier to...
I have intentions of hiking the PCT at some point in the next 5 years and would love some recommended reads on other peoples experience hiking it. I have read the obvious, Wild, but looking for other...
It is easy to over plan and my best advice is to figure it out as you go. As a SOBO I learned a tremendous amount of what I was going to encounter from the NOBO's and section hikers. You will develop...

Olive on Blood Mountain. She has been here many times and loves it. One of "Squirt's" favorite hikes!
I have used UJ's for 2 section hikes and we stayed there on our SOBO and never had anything but excellent service. On our SOBO he drove us to dinner and to get a cache of New Belgium and asked for...
We saw a one legged black man in Shenandoah, "Step & a Half" or "One Step"???, hiking a section.
I also used the BD Contour CF's on my thru and they worked excellent! I had no problems with the flick locks and they were much easier to use than the twist locks. I like the way the carbon dampen's...
Only you can answer that question because either of your two options (tent/hammock & "sneakers"/boots) will work just fine. Anyone can give you recommendations but you should pick what works best for...
Yeah, chipmunks are sometimes worse than mice. One night we had the food in the tent (I know, bad idea, but there was NOWHERE to hang it) and a chipmunk started his way through the side of the tent...
On the night of 10/29/06 (our wedding night and 1st night of our honeymoon) a mouse at the Hawk Mt. shelter ate the fabric flowers off my wife's tobaggon while she slept. She woke up and there was a...
Lots of bear here in N. GA and all the ones I have seen have had tons of Southern hospitality. We saw some huge wild hogs around Poplar Stomp, largest I have ever seen, this time last year and my...

Thats exactly when we were going through Roan Mt. as sobo's last year and we were mid-pack so definately take some magic. It was freezing during the night and cool during the day with no snow or ice...
The ATC's Sept/Oct '09 Journey's newsletter shows the Maine Roadhouse & Stratton Motel as being for sale. (207) 553-1323
We were in the Virgina Highlands, VA (of course) this date last year and probably mid-pack with the 2008 sobo's if that gives you any reference. We hit GA line on 9th of November.
Perfect time to start. We started June 13th last year and the conditions were horrible (mud, rain, bugs). Your date would be much better. Best of luck!
ditto, us too
Damascus & Hot Springs get our pick as #1 trail towns by a large margin
And Tennessee, well you can take me out of Tennessee but you can't take the Tennessee out of me!
Sorry to intrude on the Women's Forum. I had a similar experience. I put the ring and a split of Champagne in a dry bag and we hiked to the top of Springer (where we married as well). I distracted...
On our SOBO last year Dirt Cowboy's Cafe was THE BEST coffee on the trail by a million miles and the COOP was the best resupply on the trail by a zillion miles!

We are living on over 10 acres in a mid-sized farmhouse in N. GA only 45 minutes from Amicalola for that.....geesh. I did enjoy how the snooty locals in Hanover looked at us in disgust thinking we...
