Hiked along Wilburn ridge last weekend. Always good to go back home!
Saw a grizzly couple weeks ago. Jumped right out on the trail in front of me not 10 yds away. Somehow it didn’t see Or hear me til then. We were in brush over my head. A simple “ hey bear” and it...

Had a 0 deg bag.
Had 3 nights below 0.
Had at least 10 nights in single digits.
Had at least 20 nights in the teens.
Had 40 nights below 32.
It was an unusually cold year. We...
Drink the same thing I do at home, Whole bean coffee. Use GSI outdoors coffee rocket. $10, only a few ounces in weight.
I’ve owned so many tents it’s ridiculous. My favorite for the last 10 years has been big Agnes. I’m on my second one. You can’t beat their weight-to-space ratio. I don’t carry poles though so you...
Just went weekend before Memorial Day weekend for 4 days. There were day hikers everywhere, getting out bc of covid cooped upness. The AT was like a highway so we stayed off the ridge as much as we...
I also like to take a folding saw and often a hatchet. I do more bushcraft these days in more remote areas than I do AT hiking.
Don’t carry a knife usually when I’m backpacking any significant distance. For weekend hiking and basecamping which I do more often these days it’s a hand-me-down 1940s fixed blade old timer that I...
Agree. If it had about 200 acres might be worth considering
Tomorrow I’m gonna see if I can get the FKT down the slopes. My son is a fierce contender but I still think I can beat him.
Bring water, great place
Have fun!
I’ve hiked havasupai south rim to Colorado to south rim several times, but I’m not sure you can do a true rim to rim in havasupai.

Last time I was on the knobstone, I performed Step #3 and it helped me tremendously. Thanks for confirming I made the correct decision.
Since this thread was started (a decade ago...wow!)...I have hiked the knobstone. For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t hike this trail in the summer. Of course I’m biased away from the hot and itchy.
I built a disc golf course on my property. One could call it a trail I suppose.
It never ceases to amaze me how people act paralyzed when they are in the woods and cold weather, say -10 with a foot of snow and a few miles to walk, happens. People do this every week, in say bwca...
In case you don’t know about the continuous foot trail called the mid state trail that runs the length of PA, make sure you check it out!

Damascus was still completely green this past weekend
We started 1 feb. it took us 150 days to do the trail. We had at least 50 of those days with snow. Up to 3 feet of it at one point. We had 8-10 nights below 0, and 80 or so below freezing. We...
We did this same hike over the Memorial Day weekend. It sure was a lot tougher than I remembered!

Do you have to have reservations to stay at Garfield or guyot campsites? Is there a fee?
Stanimal hiked a little with us in 2004 on his thru. Glad to see he has a hostel and is doing well.
I’m over 250. Never seen a need for anything other than standard equipment. Neo Xtherm for me.
