Hammock Pros:
-Recent study (and my personal experiance) shows people generally fall asleep faster and deeper in hammocks. This is dependent on wether or not the hammock is being used correctly. If...
It's threads like these that leave me spending most of my forum time at HammockForums.
People keep saying you need to buy your backpack last. Let me help you out - get an REI membership and buy a backpack first. Goodluck practicing using your gear without one. Take good care of it and...
Oh - I almost forgot - see you out there!
I started about two years ago also, since then I injured a tendon in my foot, reactivated my osgood-schlatter in my knees, injured my knee, and I think that's about it. What did I learn? Good hiking...
I'm going to try and buy an Icebreaker Kent Polo for my thru.
My buddy and I went to the MD section when it was 10* (I think 0 with wind chill) to prep for our Thru. We wanted to experiance some of the worst conditions possible before our actually hike to...
** Ergo, the possibility of needing snowshoes or crampons---most thruhikers just don't want to carry these items, especially the snowshoes, due to the weight. Postholing thru deep snow is the...
There should be a section for parents with minors or even college students attempting thru-hikes and tips like this should be included.
Your wife should come first.
That being said, choosing the trail isn't putting your wife second. But return to her.
Noticing it happening? Or treating people differently after? (I agree if you're talking about the latter.)
I can't help what I see. Humans learn from recognizing patterns. I can however choose to...

I was a non-hiker before I was a hiker. Treating people poorly because of how they look is wrong. I work retail and 90% of our theft comes from a specific sex/ethnicity/style category. I DO NOT...
Thanks 10-k!
I'd also say this: Research, research, research, then TRY, and THEN buy.
I didn't research enough, or try enough, and went out and bought a bunch of stuff, and sold/returned all of it, usually...
REI is a great place to start.
I'm taking an Osprey Exos 58 on my thru. REI makes the Flash 50 and 65 which is a cheaper option, GoLite also makes some more affordable options. If you plan on...

You could also try the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter - $40 - But it's not a cheap or uncomfortable by any means. If you don't like it, not as big of a loss. If you do, it'll make a great back up, or...
I'd go with platypus over anything else, but that's just my $0.02
The Osprey is lighter, with a vented back system, maybe not the shoulder straps and hipbelt you're looking for, but a good middle ground between the true UL pack straps and the full padded straps.
I like my Flash 50 and 65 - But you might want to check out:

And some packs at granitegear.com
If you get the 65 take out the frame-sheet...
