You're still determining the adequacy of someone else's thru-hike based on some definition of backpacking. It's certainly okay to approach it as a long backpacking trip (it would be my preference to...

We call it hiking if we walk a section of trail, no matter what we choose to carry that day.

    It's still thru hiking.

You've taken a couple of anecdotal examples and painted an entire class with giant uninformed strokes.

That is the definition of a 'broad assumption'.

Rick isn't saying graffiti doesn't exist, or that it's not a problem. Only that it's not a 'massive problem' in comparison to various other things like the examples he cited.

I think he updates every few days. Last one appears to be 7/5, so no indication that he's given up. But he is off pace by about 40 miles.

If you're carrying bear spray properly, it should be -far- more ready to deploy and easier to use effectively in a panic than any firearm.

If it worked well and had long term effectiveness, $500 would be a flat out bargain compared to the alternative.

Are you doing it during the week or on a weekend? If it's during the week it won't be busy at all. The Roanoke AT club posts regular updates on water conditions in the area.

I honestly think you'll be okay. A good fluffing and the vast majority of it will come back. Also a good opportunity for a wash while you're doing all this if you're haven't done so recently.

Yes, it's generally a safe spot. Over the years there have been occasional incidents, but not frequently. I wouldn't hesitate to park there for several days as needed.

This. It's certainly a problem -when- it happens. But it's not running rampant up and down the trail, destroying an ecosystem or the ability to appreciate the remarkable resource we have available.

    Clearly there's some confusion here.

No one has asked a question about an Ursack/Allmitey. The discussion is about odor resistant food storage bags.
