Ummm.... You seem to be trying to "school" someone (who has been here for over 15 yrs) in trail terminology. He was asking very valid questions. There could very easily have been someone you were...

Yes, I do believe that to be true based on the reasons I have given. Yes, it is speculation on my part.
Without more info, the majority of this thread is speculation. I was simply explaining the reasoning behind my answer.
True, but if he had left his pack on the porch at the ranger station they would have noticed an overdue hiker and started a search Thursday evening. They check their porch and the hiker sign-in sheet...
In this instance it is probably a good thing he had his pack with him because he spent 60 hours on the mountain. He most likely needed the extra warmth at night, as well as the food in his pack....
You might try contacting NEOC (New England Outdoor Center). One of their locations is located outside of Millinocket, and on the road to Baxter State Park. I don't know much about their guided hiking...
I would guess there won't be a whole lot of last minute reservations available, especially if they are limiting capacity. Might be able to snag the odd opening if a reservation didn't show up, but...
^^ THIS sounds like it could be the answer for when people ask, "What can I do for Trail Magic?" I think this might be an untapped market. ;)
I can think of a couple of other reasons why people...
What works for one, doesn't necessarily work for all. Doesn't make it right, or wrong...it just means people do what works best for them, for their hike (in this instance).
"Planning to Prepare vs...
I was speaking from personal experience. My experiences have been hit and miss on the blankets in the huts. If the huts do open this season, I doubt they would be offering blankets/pillows. There is...
The bunk rooms of the huts are not heated and do not have bedding. You will need to bring sleeping (bag/quilt) gear with you.
I've found the huts to be useful in introducing friends to the White...
It kind of looks like a stove in the Primus family... REI used to carry Primus backpacking stoves.
Is it really that much different than having a nickname...or many nicknames?
My given name doesn't fit me nearly as well as the nicknames friends and family have created for me. One is just a...
A trash compactor liner does a fantastic job of keeping stuff dry in the pack. You might even be able to find a box at your local grocery store.
Anker makes reliable battery packs for charging...
June 1st (depending on the virus) is a pretty good target date. Though, this past June, the trails most likely would not have opened to allow a June 1st start date. There was still too much snow....
COVID-19 restrictions aside, it really is "no easy way to get there from here." Your best bet would most likely be Rattle River Hostel for a shuttle, or maybe there are some private shuttles willing...
It usually takes people a while to dial-in their gear enough to comfortably go ultralight. It's a matter of learning what works for their own personal hiking style.
With that, given that you get...
Those who are visiting Maine from out of state (those who reside in Vermont and New Hampshire are exempt) currently have to self-quarantine for 14 days, or they must provide proof of having tested...
Not a whole lot more to be added.
I have found that when a health issue is new, one doesn't know/can't think of all the specific questions to ask their doctor. Perhaps the hiking community can...
While I personally do not have experience with this issue, I have heard of others using an Aarn pack. I have also heard of others having a positive experience with PaceGuard....
Actually, July falls under Stage 3 of the reopening plan. The 14 day quarantine does still (currently) apply to anyone from out of state during that stage.
Like I said in a previous posting, this...
Maine is only just starting to re-open. The executive orders have been extended, with business just now starting to resume in a staged approach. The staging information can be found here:...
BSP did not make this decision with any one group in mind. It is all about doing their part to help discourage the spread of the virus. Baxter is located in the middle of Maine. Many people come from...
The models are merely predictions, based on information. Without thorough testing, they do not have all the information. I live in Maine and can tell you the testing does not reflect the true number...
A very wise decision. Maine is nowhere near "peak" for this virus.
