@TwoSpirits Thanks for the suggestion. I've sewn my own hammock tarp and dry bags, I should be able to tackle mesh, but it seems like a huge trial and error thing I'd like to avoid if I can simply...
I thru-hiked the AT with pants that had a mesh liner for support (like found in Swimming Trunks). I loved them because they fit well and provided support so I didn't need underwear. It was one less...
I'm working on a new tarp for the CDT. The design will be very similar to this tarp except I'll add mesh to it. http://www.campingjay.com/2015/02/myog-backpacking-tarp-3/ I plan to attach 4"-6"...
Thanks for the replies guys! He's definitely not a snow/ice guy. We both grew up and live in Louisiana and rarely see snow. I'll give him the bad news.
Thanks again for the replies!
My brother will be in Maine in March. Does anyone know the trails to climb Mt. Katahdin are likely to be open then? Thanks!
I like hiking but my feet don't. My feet are flat. My trailname is Flatfoot. Starting on the 13th of April. Cheers!
I am planning a PCT hike this year and noticed Southwest airlines has a sale going on right now. I will book a flight in to San Diego.
I'm wondering now about return flights from Canada. Which...
I'm Flatfoot. Thru-Hiked the AT in 2013. Looking forward to getting on the trail again!
If you keep your food in your tent, mice will eat through the tent to get to the food.
You don't need a bear canister as was previously stated if you don't camp in the five mile wide, bear...
If you don't have your mountain legs yet, skip it.
Mail half of it to yourself in Boiling Springs.
Get the convertible pants with the leggings that unzip and make sure it has webbing inside. That way you don't need underwear--it's built in.
Skye15, you'll fall in with a group and probably stick with them most of the trail. Trail mates are very protective, especially when women are involved. They'll look out for you even without...
I've decided to take the Megabus (great idea!) to Atlanta, then take Marta to visit cousins in Marietta for a couple of days.
Unfortunately they won't be able to bring me to Springer Mtn. Is...
I just want to second everything that 4eyedbuzzard said. GREAT POST!
I'd give odds :)
David is a very nice guy and I'm certain he'd be glad to help you out.

I tried rain pants and didn't like them. They may be great for having in camp and provide additional insulation against the cold, but I sweat so much underneath when hiking in them that they became...
This is terrific! Thanks, I'm bookmarking it :)
I'll be traveling from Baton Rouge to Georgia mid March for my hike, preferably starting March 15th. If anyone is passing through on their way from out west, I'd love to hitch a ride with you.

Skip the pack cover and go with dry sacks. I've got one for my sleeping bag that doubles as a compression bag, a small one for electronics, another for medical, and one for clothes, each one a...
Do you wear liner socks? I always wear them and never get blisters. Wore them when I thru hiked the AT two years ago, never got close to getting blisters.
This infers that it does not include Jarrard Gap but according to the postings in and about the area, Jarrard Gap campsites are included. When I thru-hiked in 2013, I camped just before Jarrard Gap...
I carried about $100 cash and my debit card. Always kept it on me in the same zipped up pocket, never in my pack. Loctite has a really nice small Ziploc type bag perfect for cash and credit cards.
For mail drops, I recommend only two. Fontana Dam and Monson, ME.
Fontana because food there is so damn expensive. You'll pay over $3.00 for a box of mac & cheese that would normally cost you 38...
