Lyle, this is the most salient point, and by that I mean “ease of use”, not specifically page flipping. A guidebook is something that thru-hikers will use multiple times a day for 4-6 months.
If...
Yes, they are different publications. The title of "the Awol book" is "The A.T. Guide." An overwhelming majority of thru-hikers carry The A.T. Guide. Search the book's title and you'll easily find...

The inset map that's shown in an earlier post is in the Southbound version of The A.T. Guide. It'll be in next year's Northbound book. My book has a notation throughout the Whites that is intended...
Yes, send me an email.
Symbols are described on the first page of the book. The “mailbox” symbol is used only for post offices. The “envelope” symbol indicates a place other than a PO where you can receive a maildrop. ...
Hi Tom. I know nothing about your writing, so this post is not intended to be critical of you. This is my general advice and opinions on writing.
Knowing solid technical fundamentals is the...
Thanks for posting your write-up, Pages. Doing a hands-on comparison is the best way to choose. Anyone who does so, and prefers to keep another book can return mine for a refund.
An earlier post...
No, there are no holes, and little margin in which to punch any. A ziplock is about the only way to contain it, and there's little choice but to use maildrops to get sections. It's sounding like...
I’d started out as a “keep the whole book” hiker, because I like to look ahead, and I liked the idea of having the book I hiked with for posterity. I ditched that plan after about a week. Partly in...

Sorry if this news is reaching you a little late...see post #16 in this thread:...
A PDF download (nobo & sobo) is now on-line: http://www.shop.theatguide.com/Books_c3.htm If you are buying just the PDF, it is $7.95. The PDF is 50% off if you order a book at the same time, but be...
I collect trail data independently and conform my results to match “official” ATC mileage. The total (2185.9) is the same in the 2013 Data Book and in The A.T. Guide 2013.
The book wasn't designed to be viewed on a small screen, so some things (town maps in particular) require panning & zooming. I don't know of anyone that's used PDF for anything other than a backup....
The AT Guide didn't come from Wingfoot's book (The Thru-Hiker's Handbook). Both books were being used in 2010, along with The Companion. All had different features and formats.
The West Hartford PO and Library are closed and I was told (just a couple weeks ago) that neither would be open this summer. The Village store *is* open and, since the PO is closed, they've added...
This is the list of towns for which there is a map in The A.T. Guide, listed south to north. These might be considered the “primary” trail towns, though there’s more than any one thru-hiker would...
Good catch. The book publisher asked for author photos "in an outdoor environment” and wanted something different from what was already in the book. With my looks, it’s hard to find a picture of me...
Hurricane reroutes may still be in place next summer, but no changes have been made to the "official" mileage data on account of them. Total milage has increased by 3.2 miles to 2184.2, but that is...
Watch Colter's "Alone Across Alaska," it's one of the best.
Steady your camera and work with it mounted whenever possible.

Ecopelagicon (207) 864-2771 recently contacted me and asked to be listed as an "outfitter" in The A.T. Guide. They were already in the book, but are now carrying more stuff for hikers. They...
The 2012 AT Guide will ship in January. Updates are done right up to the first of December so it will be as up-to-date as possible. Also, I email updates during the season to anyone who subscribes...
