I use bread bag tabs (the square tab with cutout notch). Put the sock around the shock cord and secure with the tab. Also use them to hang and dry clothes in camp, so I usually have about 6 - 8...
I have one of those as well and don't cary it most of the time because of weight. But cut down like you've done, I would use it. I've also been looking for a "frost" layer. Good idea!
Congratulations on the weight loss. Way to go!!
I have a circle cut out of a lid of a plastic coffee container to use for this. I took out the back support in my ULA, and store this plastic piece there. Does double duty and there when I need it.
You know, if I had come with an expiration date, I would tend to agree with you.
I just want to continue to live the life I've become accustomed too! : )
Suzie... best of luck on your hike.
The title of the thread is " What the heck am I doing? " I agree, what the heck are you doing? Everybody makes their own decisions and there's always the argument that something may happen and you...
Since my last post on this thread I have used this training yet again... an elderly in-law has had a mild stroke. I was able to use the skills I learned through this class to assess that something...
I remember one bear encounter in GSM. Had a 16 y.o. boy with me. We saw a dead tree falling on a hill ahead of us. Then kept hearing crashing. Figured it was limbs breaking as it fell. It was a...
When I'm "hammocking" and it gets to cold for me (I don't have the underquilts), I "go to ground". I set up my tarp for a 3 sided tent either using a hiking pole or tree and use my hammock wrapped...
When I signed up I thought I would learn to apply a few bandages... boy was that wrong! I was amazed at everything Matt taught us in only 2 days. I have used my training several times to assess an...
Mitch, sent pm... also available after new year.
The Cherokee hunt and eat bear, I have it every year when I visit Maggie Valley for a Dutch oven cookoff. Pretty good when cooked correctly.
I don't like the inhumane treatment of animals...
I condition horses in the Ocala National Forest most winters. Each year I can see that the population is increasing and becoming less afraid of people. And the bears are becoming larger. The...
Take a piece of aluminum foil and fold it about 4 times and makes a strip and then curl it up in the bottom of pan. I guess you could unfold it to use as a plate if needed.
The "oven shelf" is a...
I folded aluminum foil into a strip about 1" wide and 8" long then curled it into a spiral/curl in the bottom of the pot. This supports the "shelf" of light tin. I cut it in a circle and then...
Pictures didn't post very well, hope you can see it.
Here's a picture of the simmer ring. It's a very thin connecting ring for maybe dryer venting? I cit it down to the height of my stove and then notched it to allow enough air in.
Other picture...
I've been using the silicone baking cups. In my very small pot I can fit two regular size muffin cups or one jumbo muffin cup. They hold their shape, clean easily (just water and rub sides...
So then the next question....
Since a lot of the hike is mental, do you then think there is a higher success rate with multi hikers ( with friend, spouse, or partnered up on the trail ) than hiking...
Again... amazing!
So this totally turns my theory upside down...
First, you need the mental fortitude.
Second, add a little gear and a few skills ( or get both along the way! )
I guess that is what I was asking. That is so surprising to me, I wouldn't have expected it.
Time... Right now it's the large block of time I would need. So, until then I do things that I can fit in, multi-day, week long, or a few weeks. Just hoping that the health holds out until...
As for how many are ill prepared, I think it's more a matter of many of them really not knowing that their getting into. Internet learning only goes so far. You either adapt or go home. The AT - It...
So has the question ever been asked... What percentage of hikers leaving Springer are well prepared (gear wise)? And how much does that increase the odds of success? Is a person 2 or 3 times as...
