Wasn't there just a shooting in GA, not AT related iirc, and they caught the shooter via some pics on a trail cam? I think these are more common than you'd think.
Just saw this thread. I had spoke to Josh in '15, when my daughter and I did Springer to Neels, and he mentioned he was trying to sell the place. Good folks and they'll be missed.
Does anyone...
As a younger man I spent quite a bit of time in Northern Norway during the winter, about 2-3 months a year for over 5 years. Some tips...as you know dress down to the point that you're not sweating....
Sold pending funds. Thanks!
Came here to post something very similar. Those foods that are less than desirable at home may taste like manna from heaven after a few weeks of hiking, especially if you're cold and wet. As an...
Bought this for my daughter a few months ago and it's just not her cup of tea. Great tent but she prefers her copper spur 1.
This has been gently used for 3 nights and is in excellent condition....
I carry a Borah gear down vest and luke's ultra-light down sleeves. Very warm, adjustable to meet conditions and with a wind breaker or rain jacket over the top the set up is very parka-like.
Best might be to bring a .22 rifle and hunt along the way. I've carried close to a months worth of food but used a pulk, if that helps.
I repaired a Klymit recon with shoe goo ( the clear) and it's held up fine.
IMHO the suggestion of using water and your hand to clean after defecation is irresponsible. This promulgates oral/fecal disease and parasite transmission and should be avoided.
The fact that...
What type of cooking do you do while hiking? I'm pretty much either a cold meal guy or freezer bag so all I usually ever need is to boil water. Lately I've been messing around with this:...
Hiking in the woods is the natural state of the bieng. In today's world of self induced pressures and stress a good walk in the woods goes a long way towards peeling through some of that and...
There's some great .mil surplus gear hitting the market. Most of it is still pretty pricey but there are also some good deals to be found. Patagonia and Orc PCU pants are great gear and extremely...
Got one as a stocking stuffer! My pride will now require me to walk a couple 100 yards away from other hikers to inflate my pad.
My bowel evacution SOP is as follows:
- Small amount of TP buried in the cat hole and rock/branch on top.
- A single wipe then to polish. First I wash my face with the wipe, then my hands and...
I've been blessed with 4E feet so my options are somewhat limited....generally it's a lightweight 6" boot, Danner's as of late.
The SMD Deschutes Plus is a floorless tarp, no? What's your plan for when you make camp in a rain storm and the ground is wet or muck? Tyvek or polycro will work but have a plan because it'll...
Love the suggestions on food using miles. Interesting.
My calcs for food are generally about 2500 calories per day on walks of about 5 days or less. Longer hikes, once hunger kicks in I bump...
Ha. See my post above. Wrong thread! Oh well
wrong thread
I'm not a fearful person. My most significant concern would be humans that are evil.
Here's a nice list: http://blackwoodspress.com/blog/12378/cottage-backpacking-gear-directory/
I've been playing with my cold weather sleep system and have had some good success mixing down clothing and my Z-pack 30 degree bag. My intent was to cut weight by intergrating camp colthes into my...
Jacket received and looks great. Thanks.
