It could get ugly in either direction. Check with US Customs.
In Virginia
I read it wrong ...................I thought you were doing a shake down. But still it's a great section hike too.
My vote would go to a NOBO in the Nantahala. Get a shuttle to a road (don't know the name off the top pif my head) south of Standing Indian and go north to Nantahala Outdoor Center. If you do that as...
You stay warm on a SOBO the same way you stay warm on a NOBO. I doubt if that helps much, but you asked.
I'll just jump right to it............Gossamer Gear Mariposa.......... IMHO
If you are on a tight budget, YOU DID GOOD. If you are in good physical condition, that will go a long way. I would suggest bic light vs zippo. Box of waterproof matches for backup. Use Gatorade...
Play it safe and Hang It. Emphasis on the word Safe. 100 - 200 feet from your tent and water source. Form a triangle of Campsite, Water & Food. Don't cook by your camp, if you are staying at the...
Check out Six Moons Design & Yama Mountaineering for good CF Tents. Nothing wrong with ZPacks either.

I use a Soto Pocket Torch. Flame from a distance.
I like the Frogg Togg pants going full commando. Nothing works on top.
They probably use scraps from their other gear. Try Yama Mountaineering in Charlottesville, Va.
You just answered your own question
I prefer LW to UL. I like that 1 more day of food and 1 more layer of clothes that tips the scales. You can really get into a jam, in a major way, depending on the seasonal changes. IMO.
Long Underwear with Baggies Shorts and Gaiters and / or Gore-Tex Rain Shell Pants
I used to have Asolo Yukons. They were tough as nails and as heavy as cinder blocks. I'm taking up hiking again and just bought a pair of Lowa's. They are 2lbs 5 oz.
Giving them a test drive next...
You got a degree. That's an important accomplishment in itself. Now, you'll work the rest of your life, unless you win a big lottery, or inherit a lot of money. So do what you want. I suggest living...
I just bought a pair of Lowa. I have wide feet, so the selection is slim. They are Nubick Leather. I tried on Keen and Vasque and the Lowa felt like moccasins. They feel broken in already. I'm taking...
