Thanks, everyone.
Hi, all,
A good friend asked me to recommend a tent for his son & partner to hike in Scotland. All my experience is with single wall UL tents in the USA, and I don't know that they would be the...
We did an e2e hike in 2014, when we were in our early 50s. The LT is a tough hike but Vermont is beautiful. Have fun.
Thanks, I had seen that and noted it in the Companion for next year. Too bad, I had some great meals there on my hikes in the area.
Foot pain after a sudden increase in weight bearing activity, especially something like hiking with a pack, can easily be a stress fracture. Worth taking seriously. Ice it every few hours, rest the...
We've had frost in the Southern Appalachians in June, and pretty late in June. Often the lows are in the low 50s all summer, which is well below the point where I am happy in a bag liner. A 45F quilt...
I can't help you with resupply, however I can make a food recommendation in Cuba, NM. Inside the Phillips 66 station at the north end of town is the Chaco Grill. It doesn't look like much, but the...
Yes, the lodge is very nice, and do make reservations now.
Yeah, I've hiked in GA in January in 70 degree weather, and also when the highs were barely in double digits.
I would want a cold weather sleeping pad to go with my winter bag - lots of heat gets...
I still use my old blue Columbia long sleeve nylon fishing shirt. I don't know when I bought it, but I have photos of myself wearing it in the Grand Canyon in 2006. It's starting to get a little...
I took a 3/4 length pad on our Long Trail e2e hike to save weight. It was great the first few nights in our tent, but the first time we stayed in a shelter my feet hurt on the bare wood floor....
I had a conversation with a 22 year old this morning, and he used the phrase "trust but verify." And I said, oh, you're channeling Ronald Reagan. Well, he had no idea. Said he'd heard the phrase from...
At the top of the first big climb (Whitetop) you'll come to campsites in the woods, which aren't great, but walk a little further and out into the open and there is a good site on your right (going...
I use ear plugs when solo hiking, at least for the first few days. After that I'm usually so tired I just fall right asleep. The ear plugs are also useful in hostels.
The weather in Alaska might be more amenable to this. Here, when it's 90+ and super humid even late in the evening in the summer, the peaty whiskies are just not right.
Good single malt Scotch. Highland in the summer, big peaty Islay malts in the shoulder seasons.
I have replaced my small sit pad with a 6-section z rest for just this reason. It makes a great pad for lounging at lunch or on breaks, and I can sleep on it if my NeoAir fails (which it never has.)
Aw, come on, TW, a couple of patches and some repair glue and that pad will be just like new. :)
My partner likes her ULA Circuit. She has the S-curve shoulder straps and they fit her well. The pack can be ordered in several torso lengths, with different sizxe hip belts, too.
Big outfitters...
Is the out and back thing a necessary part of the hike? Outdoor Trails did shuttles the last time we hiked that area, and you could get shuttled 2 weeks north and hike back.
Have parked at the library several times, it's been fine.
Good story. I had followed her on occasional posts on Facebook, probably from Outside Magazine or Guthook. It's nice to see the whole story all in one place.
You are not wrong :)
If the shelter or camp area has bear cables or bear poles or boxes, use them. That's the easiest thing. If not, the next easiest is an Ursack or bear canister, there is no rope to throw or tree to...
This is my favorite section of the AT, and one of my favorite hikes. Early June will be lovely. Not too hot during the day, cool at night. Plenty of water. Long days, can hike well into the evening....
