I used a 0,5 liter Platypus bag. As it empties, it collapsed nicely around my cooking gear. No leakage and easy to pour. Make sure you don't mistake it for your water bottle!
I wore the SportKilt throughout my '06 AT thru-hike and loved it! That said, if I had any doubt about whether or not I would get a hitch into town, I would change into a pair of ltwt running shorts...
I wore Sportkilt on my 06 AT trip. Excellent and VERY light and functional. They have a Hiker Kilt now of which I had the prototype in 06. It's a synthetic fabric with wide velcro w/elastic...
Anyone aware of the status of the spring at Wm Brien Mem Shelter? I'm planning a few days on the trail and would like to stop there for a night.
Thanks!

WELL SAID, Snickers!
Mark "Postcard" Hughes'. All of his AT trips (on trailjournals.com) and his aborted PCT trip this year. Lots of wonderful original art and 'artfully' crafted words.
His website and book helped me get excited about, plan for, hike, and process my AT thru-hike last year. His book wasn't perfect - but I thought it was better than the alternatives - at least for...
Hmmm....I'm sorry. I'm trying to understand what specific impacts state park closure would have on AT hikers. I'm having difficulty remembering how much I relied on state parks during my PA traverse....
My only slack was the 18-19 miles out of Hanover. It allowed me to hike unencumbered on a very hot summers day and, most importantly, to come back to a favorite friend's home in Norwich for another...
I wore Ibex shirts. Lightweight wool, very breathable and durable. I would sweat it out, of course, then rinse it out every chance I could and the wet shirt would keep me cool until it was time to...
Ditto. Worrying about how someone else hikes their hike DOES diminish MY hike. I, too, got caught up in unfairly judging hikers who breezed unencumbered past me on their slack. I think it was...
I packed mine in checked luggage and didn't have a problem.
I agree with what others have said. Have something you can change in to at the end of the day, Truely, it will make you feel better. I OFTEN head downstream of the water source to clean up. Usually...
2 or 3 fingers of single malt Scotch should do it.
Short of that, I hiked successfully with Aqua Mira, but also met lots of those folks who used household bleach, iodine (my backup), and/or drank...
Gives them a chance to snuggle-up to share the "warmth" of the Trail! FYI - I, like David, kept my gear until Pearisburg. Even then, I kept a pair of longjohns to help keep me warm in my summer bag...
Never underestimate the abilities of people who use wheelchairs, especially if they made the commitment to hike the Trail. But be aware that accessibility is not only about people who use...
I used Guttermans, as well. Also, I was advised to use needles with a larger threading hole. Makes it much easier with this thread.
Same here. Hope this will offset the Springer Fever I'm feeling now.
Kilt, regimental-style. I wore one last year with NO chafe. My only chafe came from spandex shorts worn for 3 days in extremely wet weather.
OOps..."2000 miler"! :banana
A few folks did it in 2006. They left the AT at Front Royal and returned at Harpers Ferry. Evryone can get their picture taken at the ATC. You don't have to say your a 'purist' thru-hiker. Hike your...
[quote=Tipper;340673]As we all know, people WITHOUT disabilities are equal, either. ]
meant to say "AREN'T EQUAL":p
I've had plenty of personal and professional experiences traveling with folks with and without disabilities (together) in wilderness areas. Instead of separating folks as: Disabled - Ablebodied, etc....
I found an excellent instant espresso, repackaged into a ziplock. One teaspoon, usually added to an instant hot chocolate, was my usual morning drink. Very tasty!
