Yes there is a road that takes you to within a mile or so of the A.T at Barnjum. I live near there. It was fine last year. The road ends at several large boulders placed purposefully across the road...

Don't know if this is too late in the game to answer. I live 45 mins west of Stratton. I'd say it's about 1hr 45mins drive to Augusta from there where there is a large Concord Trailways bus station...
Thanks for the advice. I did Google search prior to posting here but it's nice to have things confirmed by people in the know.

Hey,
I'm wondering about the closest airport and reliable shuttle service to get me to US321 near Hampton TN. I think it's US321 anyways. I got off the trail near Watauga Lake/Dam in 2004. I'll be...
Perhaps starting in Maine instead of Georgia. And not planning, except for a time frame. Plans seem to get in the way. I saw quite a few people rushing to get a mail drop and missing out on things....
Has anyone hiked this loop? I see that the Valley trail was closed last year but re-opened this summer. Looks like a very short hike to the shelter with the bulk of it on Day 2 back down the valley....
Don't you mean Pesto is the besto?
The few days before leaving were the scariest. I always go all quiet and reflective before heading out for a long hike. Once the feet hit the trail its down to business and i'm back to my old self.

Hello fellow Englishman. I too will be following the world cup closely stateside. I've been living in rural Maine now for 6 years (post hike) and watched the last one on TV. It was all but impossible...
I quit on springer in march 04, then to reward myself after a 30 mile day from newfound to mountain mammas i smoked a whole pack right there and then. Quitting on trail is tough. I didn't smoke after...
For firearms chat here is a link to a gun forum http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/
I though the original post was about carrying guns on the AT, maybe i misunderstood the question.

Next time i hit the AT i'm packing heat. Forget about having it in the backpack, i'm strapping mine to my 4-wheeler. I need to find somewhere to park my 36" wheel toyota pickup first though.

I met a dude in 04 at Neels Gap, then again in the Smokies, ex military i think. S'no big deal for me as i come from London, but i could see why people might be taken aback by seeing a black dude on...
A disgusting dish my ex motherinlaw makes which is mini onions in some kind of cats vomit sauce. No one ever ate it, yet she made loads, and still does every year. Baffling.
Oh yeah, and another...
People talk about busting out 20 mile+ days routinely. I'd like to hear people bragging about the shortest day. I'm talking on-trail mileage, not including hiking into or out of a town, or road...
My buddy slipped and fell on the PCT north of Stephens Pass in the Cascades. I was right behind him and luckily had enough time to dive and grab his pack strap, then haul him back up. It was a...
Oooooo, White Russians post just reminded me of a strange coincidence, rather than something totally weird. While hiking the JMT in 2002 i stayed at VVR for a day or two. Had a great time there and...
I saw a huge green inflatable alien sitting on the privy at Hogback Ridge shelter in NC back in 2001. I later read in the register that this guy (a sobo) had carried it with him because he had no...
I always thought that stuff would anger a bear more than anything else, giving it more incentive to do you in. More likely to need bear spray for use on a trail psycho or hitchhike gone wrong.
I found an old post on this same subject, i think by SGT Rock?? Anyway, yeah, it would not work here. Never mind. This is still a great site and excellent resource!!!!

Thanks, i'll nip over to facebook right now :) .......
I guess there is a slim chance that a Whiteblaze chat room would make people less inclined to post in the forums. Still, it's not like you'd...
Hi,
This is just me wondering if anyone has ever suggested to the mods of this forum that a realtime chat be introduced to the site, hosted by Userplane or something.
Anyway, it was just a...
It's not a huge long trail, it's a multitude of sections broken by town stops. Take one section at a time.

I searched the forums on this subject a little while ago. Some links were posted that were helpful, mainly youtube instructionals. One guy came up with a great idea of suspending his pepsi can stove...
