I'd suggest just getting a plastic garbage bag, stuffing your sleeping bag in it, pushing out all the air (fold yourself over it or something) and then just twist the open end around so that the air...
The secret shelter IS awesome. There will probably be directions to it on the trail near the road/bridge crossing a mile or two before Governor Clement. As of this summer (2006) the privy was still...
Well, Spirit Walker, I'm one of the carless, and I'm traveling for work the weekend of the PA Ruck, and there were several of us young recent thrus who all wanted to just get together in DC and hang...
Several still-in-withdrawal hikers (Tofu and Figaro GA>?? '05, and The Tortise GA>ME '06) are tentatively planning to get together the evening of Monday, January 22nd at my house on Capitol Hill to...
OK, I'll pull out a couple, if that's OK. I had a bunch of days which were big miles, all of which stand out as some of the best days on the trail. In order from biggest.
39 miles (34 miles were...

I discovered this year, that there is in fact space to pitch one (small) tent at the top of White Rocks Cliff on the AT/LT section in Vermont. When you take the blue-blaze down to the cliffs, get to...
I think my favorite blue-blaze that I did was in the Whites. Scrubs and I had dropped our packs off at Madison Hut, and cruised our way down via Airline into King's Ravine. We then went up through...
Greatful Greenpeace Guy, who run's Terrapin Station Hostel does shuttles - especailly if he doesn't have to get on Skyline Dr. But why bother?
My advice: just hitch-hike. There's a road that...

AMEN! - i spent about 1/3 of my nights in my Squall.
That's pretty much the conclusion that I came to. I realized once I had traded down to my little frameless pack I didn't even use it anymore.
Here's probably the most bothersome story from my thruhike last year. Free Spirit and I were on our way up towards Goddard Shelter in Vermont, and we got passed by three large (burley?) "fit" middle...
I spent my entire hike looking forward to Franconia Ridge. I had been up there once before, the previous summer, and it was rainy and nasty. This summer, the mountian didn't dissapoint. It's...

I made the mistake of buying a Marmot softshell and taking it with me. I don't regret it. It's sexy. But if I had to do it all over again I'd buy a down jacket.
What the Softshell WAS good for was...
Hah!
LOVE THE B.O.! As Grey Fox once said hiking behind me... "that smell, it's like crack to me!"
I'd just take some heavy duty aluminum foil, double it over, and call it a wind screen. It seems to work just fine, is much lighter than flashing, and is easily replaceable.
AMEN! :clap
That said, I started off with some and I think I ditched it in Hot Springs... or Damascus, I can't remember which. You don't need it.
First Note: Every person't foot is different. For some people Superfeet actually make things worse. One other problem with Superfeet, and this may have something to do with the pain the balls of...
