+1 for Silky (I particularly like the "Big Boy") and +1 for Sven Saws. I have used both for cutting wood between 1"-8" in diameter, they make quick work and are easy to handle.

Yes! I've been checking weather frequently and the past week or so has been very good. Looks like some light accumulation coming up, but I'm hopeful things are moving in the right direction now. ...
I have the same pack. Sleeping bag is a Nemo Salsa, 650 fill down rated to 15*. I've been packing it at the bottom of the pack, no stuff/compression sack. Even with more volume than a standard...
Conditions will vary year to year. Watching the snow on Katahdin should be a good indicator of when snow-melt will be impacting fords the most. That said, I would say June would not be the best...
At least it looks sunny and warm!!
casz55: I'll be on the PCT heading SOBO in early July. You don't state your planned direction, but either way you definitely need to be aware of and follow closely the snow conditions along the...
For reference, I thru hiked SOBO in 2013. June 1st - October 19th.
It took me 8 days from mile 0 to Monson. I hiked that stretch faster than most of the other SOBOs I met, mostly because I hiked...
Thanks, Wyoming. You make a good point about maintaining the training and conditioning being more difficult if I'm "waiting it out."
To wit, I've come up with a new plan. Still travel out to the...
Can you point me to a few good ones? I've been digging around on TJ and general google searches, but having a hard time finding journals/blogs from 2011 SOBOs. I'm looking to read as much as...
Thanks for the awesome info, hike1! Also, for those who haven't seen it yet, Halfmile's Water Report is now listing snow and ford conditions. Same as the water report, the snow and ford info is...
Thanks Spirit Walker, very helpful! I think I've heard of this washout, is it the one by Woody Pass? Would you recommend taking the pack trail detour?
I hiked SOBO in 2013, started June 1st. Some of the fords were high but I only "had" to wait once while water levels receded. I say "had to" because I really just wanted a good reason to Zero in...
I've obtained my LD permit, which has me starting at the Canadian Border on the 18th. The original plan is to start at Hart's Pass very early on the 17th to access the border, and just do the...
This is generally sound thinking based on my research and advice from former hikers. I have some relatives in Bellingham who spend a good deal of time in the Cascades, and I also spoke with some...
Do what I did! Zero in Hot Springs, spend night #1 at Elmer's and #2 at Laughing Heart. I found it made for a rich experience of Hot Springs, and I greatly enjoyed my time at both places.
I'm really happy to see this. As a former AMC campsite caretaker (Liberty Spring '11, Imp '12, I probably met a bunch of y'all!) I see this as a hugely beneficial move for both parties.
Hopefully...
Crocs. Many people are haters (I myself used to be one), but that's just cause they haven't tried them. As TTT says, your feet need airflow, and damp trail runners don't cut it.
I tried a pair...
How do you like the Camp Corsa? That's what I'm planning to bring on my SOBO this year. Do you find it holds up to the task as light as it is?
Engine and Caboose started today, too!
I used to work as a Shelter Caretaker in the Whites. Pulled some really amazing stuff out of the privies. Trying to decide between my favorites:
Softball
Bikini (Top and Bottom)
Headlamp
I...
+1 to slo-go'en's comment on the "dog leg." It's also kind of a pain because much of the time you are crossing the valleys, you are on roads or in fields. Vermont's reputation of being the "green...
I carried a Kindle on my thru. Absolutely, completely, 110% worth it. I read for an average of 2 hours a day on trail, many times double that. Buy yourself an Amazon gift card and buy more books...
I'm going SOBO this year, planning to bring a 15* bag. Nemo Salsa: http://www.nemoequipment.com/product/?p=Salsa%2015%20Reg
It ain't the lightest (40z), but DANG is it comfy! It is sufficiently...
Have you worn Merrel Moab Ventilators for a long time (gone through multiple pairs)? I ask because...
I hiked in that combo on the AT (Orange instead of Green SF, though) and never had a single...
I got a screamin' deal on a Patagonia Down Shirt (display model at my local outfitter), bought it on impulse:

I love it, and have been...
