i had a great time in palmerton. i found most trail towns to be friendly.
i don't think you realize that there are real people behind those keyboards. and likely the people she will meet on the trail. believe it or not, it only takes a single thru hike to know several...

i had a friend that hiked the florida trail with one and it worked well for him.
but the AT would be different. i would think there would be too much tree shade on the AT to keep anything...
i personally never use a rain jacket. no matter what, i always get wet anyway. i carry an extra pair of dry clothes and a pack cover, of course.

why don't you just rent a car and get unlimited miles. cost me just over 200 bucks not too long ago for three days.
i like the blacklite line and use only the smaller pot.
