That's interesting. Does your deaf dog read lips?
You would be hard-pressed to find more unrelenting climb anywhere in the park. Given your circumstances, I would have chosen the opposite itinerary.

That's reasonably correct. Of course, I did not have a GPS, so it's possible that I have been going to the wrong spring. The water seemed cold and wet, but without high-tech confirmation, I suppose...
That would be my recommendation. CS 95 is not nearly as nice as CS 92. Plus the climb up the Wolf Ridge trail is a bit steeper.
CS 92 is one of the nicest backcountry campsites in the park. And it's not on the AT.
I reckon "removed" is more politically acceptable than the real truth. To be consistent, though, the park should probably refer to hog hunters as "wildlife relocation technicians."
It's apparent that you have not experienced all that the Smokies have to offer.
I think that walkway was the original route of the highway. I remember my first trip to Newfound Gap, up that road from Cherokee, in 1961. When we stopped at NFG, the automatic transmission had...
You are right. But carrying firearms in the backcountry isn't legal.
Apparently, the vast majority hikers completely overcome their dislike of such towns by the time they reach Newfound Gap!!!

"Facts" like "one road crossing in 174 miles?"
Sometimes, the devil is in the details. The seemingly low utilization for 46 and 51 is reasonably explained by the fact that those sites did not exist until the very end of data collection period.
What color is the tent?
The only thing you trust the VA to do is to is throw bureaucratic roadblocks in front of you every time you try to move.
Where I live, they won't let you make an appointment until you attend an...

I would argue that if you get to "hobnob" with the LeConte Lodge guests, they will be more interested in hearing what you have to say about the hike you're nearly finished rather than the hike you...
Day 1 logistics would certainly be easier if you started on the LeConte end. You could park right at one of several trail heads (Alum Cave would be my recommendation) and get right on the trail. ...
What, exactly, would constitute "a problem," in your estimation?
For lot of folks, the reservation requirement is a problem, in and of itself.
If you think that no one has ever been unable...
That is not entirely correct. The thirty days applies to the start of the trip. The maximum length of the reservation window is 36 days. For example, if one were to reserve the night of March 11 on...
The overwhelming majority of uninitiated Smokies hikers seem to underestimate distance, underestimate difficulty, overestimate the number of hours in a day and overestimate their abilities. Throw in...
Historically, either 3 or 4 spaces have been held for thru hikers, but only during prime thru hiker season. That practice was maintained in 2013, with 4 spaces being held out of those otherwise...
The 30 days in advance policy is based on the start of the trip; it's not a rolling lead time for each day of the trip. Once you choose your first site, you can reserve an additional six nights on...
