Post Smoky Mountains Hiking Club seeks volunteers

Here is a note from Philip Royer of the SMHC. He asked me to post it here on Whiteblaze.

Many of you are already aware that the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club will
begin renovation of the Spence Field AT shelter this month, and you have
offered your assistance, so I want to inform you of the plans so that
you can determine if your schedule will allow you to participate in part
of the effort. Here's what I know currently:

On Thur. 9/8/05 or Fri. 9/9/05 we need several folks to work at
Sugarlands Park Maintenance area to seal and paint two new tool boxes,
which will be flown to Spence Field for storage of trail tools and
mulch. Plans are incomplete because the boxes are not yet there, but if
you want to help, please contact Phyllis Henry at
    (865) 577-2604.

On Sat. 9/10/05 the SMHC AT Work Trip will be to Spence Field to
demolish the existing roof and fence and prepare the demo trash for
removal by helicopter. We will leave from the Anthony Creek trailhead
at 8 AM. Bring work gloves. Other tools will be provided. Depending
on the number of volunteers, some trail maintenance may be attempted
also. Please contact Philip Royer, (865) 694-0160 or
    [email protected].

On Sat. 9/10/05 and/or 9/17/05 we need horse back volunteers to haul
some material to the Spence Field Shelter.

On Monday 9/12/05 we need two volunteers to hike to Mollies Ridge to
assist ATC personnel with the removal of demo material that remains from
that renovation project two years ago. Please contact Phyllis Henry at
    (865) 577-2604 or [email protected].

On Monday 9/10/05 we need four volunteers to hike to Spence Field to
assist ATC personnel with removal of demo material and receiving and
storage of new building material. An early start will be necessary and
it may be necessary to stay at the shelter over night if weather
prevents flying on Monday. Please contact Phyllis Henry at (865) 577-2604 or
    [email protected].

Saturday 9/17/05 - Friday 9/23/05 we need volunteers for construction
activities and possible trail maintenance at Spence Field Shelter. We
will be camping in tents near the shelter, and food will be provided for
the crew. Volunteer for all or part of the period. James Fondren will
be crew chief. Please contact Phyllis Henry at
    (865) 577-2604 or [email protected].

On Fri. 9/23/05 we would like to have volunteers to prepare a
"celebratory feast" for the volunteers returning to the Spence Field
picnic area. It is possible that this would be on Thur. if the project
is completed early, but there would be a couple of days notice for the
organizers. Please contact Phyllis Henry at (865) 577-2604 or
    [email protected].

Thank-you for all of your assistance in this large project.

I wonder if he meant the Cades Cove Picnic Area.
