    I keep seeing these.

    Default

    They are to hang your food bag and even other stuff on mice don't chew your food bag and other stuff. Often you'll see them with a tin can lid with the line going through a hole in the middle of the lid so they can't climb the string as well.

    ^ this. But to be honest, they don't work all that well. Shelter mice are little acrobats.

    Its a way for people to avoid packing out their trash. They bring their canned goods to the shelter and hang the can up on a string when they're done so they don't have to carry it with them when they leave.

    they are called "offering" ropes, where we offer up our food supplies to the native fauna. this helps placate the wildlife, to ensure they wont eat through our packs.
