http://appalachiantrailservices.net/...ikerhostel.htm I am trying to finish one up in Franklin by hiker season but it is in town. I will have a free shuttle schedule also..I am not trying to be the best on the trail, but it does help to have a choice.

Laughing heart Hostel is my favorite place on the trail in 300 miles. I have chosen to slack pack this summer to get more miles in and have used Laughing heart 3 times. From lemon Gap all the way to Erwin. (Doing Devils fork to Erwin this weekend)

Huh. Lots of votes for Woods Hole... I was there in 1990 and not at all impressed, but I suppose it's changed? There were no showers or other useful facilities there.

As for church/charity-run hostels -- the one in Pearisburg and the one in DWG were both very good, though the one in Pearisburg is a long way off the trail.

My all time favorite which nobody seems to mention is the Free State Hiker Hostel in Maryland (http://www.freestatehiker.com) ten miles south of Pen-Mar. They don't serve meals there but the place was clean, modern, spacious and has all the facilities you might need or want, including maildrops, free phone to anywhere in the US, Internet, TV, game room, kitchen, industrial sink, laundry, and transportation to/from town (Smithsburg, MD.)

Based on food alone, Elmer's (Hot Springs) and Shaws take the prize.

The Cabin in Andover Maine was great. Woods Hole is basically a B&B with hostel so the food is first class. Outdoor shower can be nippy though.
    Everything is in Walking Distance
