Many types of races (not just marathons) give each runner (or cyclist or whatever) some type of “tag” that they attach to themselves. This tag interacts with devices at the start and finish line (and I think some races will have them at other points as well) to indicate when the particular racer passed that point.
One reason behind it is so that each racer gets an accurate “time” – after all, if you have hundreds (or thousands) of racers, they aren’t all crossing the start line at one time. Some races even have staged starts, so that way they can track each individual to determine who actually completes the race the fastest.
Assumingly, putting points in the middle of the race also prevents runners from attempting to cheat (like trying to take shortcuts), since they wouldn’t know where they had to “check in”.
Back to blazes – it would just help if trails had clear markings at intersections – probably more of an issue on smaller trails than the AT and if a few areas would use more color variety (like here in NY, where you may go from yellow to blue to yellow to red to blue in a 10 mile or so hike with all of these being different trails even though the colors duplicate).
Well said. One would think you would have a basic understanding of the outdoors before heading out there. You wouldn't just get in your car and try to drive through the middle of DC during rush hourfor the first time without a GPS. Leave em white, no matter the color or flashy light thingys if you're not prepared you shouldn't be out there in the first place.
the AT should have been built like DC so there would be mas confusion no buddy would go back. can you imagine walking down to a spring coming back up and there's a circle (roundabout)with five or six different trails coming off it. it wasn't there when you went down, but it's there now. might as well put a poisons snake in that circle(roundabout) trail. they got traffic lights in the circles (Roundabouts) in DC. Nothing makes sense in DC. have nothing agents it, just doesn't make sense.
We tried that intersecting trails thing along with all sorts of different and changing names for the trails, and a bunch of other other confusing stuff in the Whites. Gets a few people lost, makes some people complain, sells a bunch of maps (to the smarter ones). But alas it doesn't keep anybody away.
