Default Cumberland Trail Needs YOUR Help!!

When completed, the Cumberland Trail will traverse the scenic Cumberland Plateau, from Chattanooga TN, to Cumberland Gap NHP on the TN-VA border for a distance of over 300 miles. There is even talk of eventually connecting it with the Georgia Pinhoti Trail and Kentucky's Pine Mountain Trail. We are currently gearing up for our fall trail construction program. There are numerous opportunities to help build Tennesses's 53rd State Park. Everything from backcountry settings to day outings with a base camp located on Chickamauga Lake are available. We are looking for volunteers who can donate time-from one day to several weeks!!! No commitment is too small. If you have a group that would like to volunteer, let us know. We can usually acommadate groups even if they want to come in at a special time. We also need people to adopt completed trail sections. If this sounds like something you might be interested in. or would like more information on the Cumberland Trail, check out our website at www.cumberlandtrail.org or call our office at 931-456-6259 central. We look forward to seeing you out on the trail.

Here is a note from my good friend Mark Stanfill. Mark is a 2000-miler (aka Buford) having walked from Springer to Pinkham in '98 and finishing up in '99. I will be running the meeting on September 27th at Rock Creek Outfitters. I hope some of you can attend these events.

    CT Volunteers,

I gotta deal for you! This weekend we will have two outings on the
Cumberland Trail. You can't miss this opportunity.

Smokey Mountain Segment - Front Country Outing in Cove Lake State Park
    (Friday - Sunday - Sept 16-18)
This outing participants will be clearing out blow downs and reblazing on
Cross Mountain in the Smokey Mt Segment. You can come out each day or
stay overnight where camping is available at Cove Lake State Park. Each
morning volunteers will meet Tony Hook at the Bruce Gap Trailhead at
8:00am EST to drive up the mountain and begin work. You will return to
the trailhead each afternoon. You are asked to have lunch, water,
gloves, & work clothes on the trail.

Directions to the Bruce Gap Trailhead: take I-75 north to Caryville,
exit 134, turn left after exiting, and wrap around till you pass a
Shoney's. Continue .5 miles to the intersection of Bruce Gap Road
(Butter and Egg). Turn right, pass under I-75 and cross over the Cove
Creek Bridge to the parking lot.

Again, please meet at 8:00am EST and be ready to spend a great day of
reopening this beautiful footpath for hikers to enjoy. Please
preregister with me if you would like to camp.

Soddy Creek Segment - Back Country Outing (Fri-Sun - Sept 16-18) Participants will pick up where the crew finished last weekend on Board
Camp Creek. The back pack in is very short to a great place to set up
camp. Please preregister for meeting times and place. Jim (aka Restless) and
Christopher did a great job leading this outing last weekend. Jim looks
forward to returning to do some more work. So don't make him go out
alone, join him in this beautiful area.

    Also this month:
Trail Maintenance Weekend (Sept 24 & 25) Join volunteers to help
    maintain segments along the CT

Volunteer Recruitment Event (Sept 27th ) at Rock Creek Outfitters in
Chattanooga. for details go to: http://www.rockcreek.com/events/volunteering.asp

Let me know you questions, thoughts, and feed back at any time.

    Peace,

    Mark
