My friend Thru Hiked the Long Trail with this gear list. Now he is going to THRU hike the PCT this April. How would you lighten the load?

Where to start? First I would not use a 30 oz pack. I did the PCT 3 times back in 1993, 1996 & 1997. I used a school book bag the whole way. Yes the same pack you would send kids with, I used as my hiking pack. Equipment is a lot lighter now. I also would also go with a lighter sleeping bag, a tarp instead of a tent, different water filter system.

Simple put, I would change out everything if I was to do the PCT again.

I'll give you a couple too. Ditch that EMS Hubba Hubba tent, 53 oz. for a tent, yikes, like carrying a piano on your back. Get a lighter tarp or tent, and like 10-K said, ditch the footprint. Get a lighter pack too.

If you actually bothered read the page, you would have seen that it says:

"For my upcoming Pacific Crest Trail Thru-hike, I have upgraded to a TarpTent Contrail, weighing in at 26.85 oz."

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime; give a man religion and he will die praying for a fish.
