Default Hiker Dies Near Elk Garden, VA.

I received a report from Mount Rogers Outfitters yesterday of a hiker death on the AT near Elk Garden, VA. I followed up on this and learned from the Grayson County Sheriff's Department that Edward Hewitt age 70 of Baltimore had died. It is rumored that Ed had thru hiked the AT.

Ed Hewitt, from Baltimore was a member of the Baltimore Road Runners Club. His son posted on the BRRC Facebook page today about the passing of his father.

    "
For those of you who have been around for a while you might remember my father Ed Hewitt. He was a long time BRRC member and passionate runner. Running the 1st MD marathon in 1973. He went on to run 31 marathons and lots of local races. He loved Loch Raven Reservoir. He logged 1000 ' s of miles out there. He passed away yesterday, Sunday March 9th having a massive heart attack while hiking Mt Rogers outside of Roanoke. He loved running and he loved running with BRRC."

My sympathy goes out to his family.

My sentiments to the family but that is also my perspective. I hope they find me on the edge of an escarpment looking toward the sunrise under a large spruce tree in my sleeping bag with a smile on my face. I hope they plant me there to fertilize the tree and give the critters a snack.
