There's only a couple of really harmful events...lyme disease, norovirus, and rattlesnake bites come to mind. There's a few bad injuries that you can get as well, but most of those cost you days instead of health. The events are random, but you're likely to get at least one bad one during a hike.

I took 27 zero days and subsequently died (!) due to lack of funds!

Thanks for the gift! I never figured people would donate money...the game is definitely being received better than I anticipated. It's so exciting to watch the stats and hear people's unique game scenarios!

For the record, 2 people have now completed the entire trail out of several hundred attempts.
I made it on my second attempt. Dang near ran out of money. The irony, I know.

A zero day at a hostel costs $80 but I think it includes five days of resupply.

anyway, I had fun with the game! An iPad or iPhone app could be addictive!

Much like real life- this game was not kind to speed hikers. 20+ mile days, a rattlesnake bite nearly did it, got some trail magic sodas that pulled it out, but alas... 120 miles and dead as doornail, even with my SUL homemade gear.

Despite staying in beautiful Helen and drinking at the Troll I just couldn't get enough sleep or bonus's from smelling the roses.

The naysayers are correct, it is impossible to hike 30 mile days on the AT. I died on day three. Thankfully reality is much kinder.

I protest. I yogied some food from section hikers at a TH who were ending their hikes so I had enough energy to make it to my next resupply.

This is another creative way to pay for a hike! Win Win.

Is this part of your DeVry Technical School Computer Programming degree?

This is a situation where my 14 yr old nephew, who's a big time "gamer", completes a thru-hike while I fail. I'm never going to live this down from him. I hope you're happy.

I was expecting energy levels to decrease faster per mile in NH and ME. Didn't happen. I was like, "OK, gotta rest before the Whites and again at Gorham".

That was kinda interesting... for about forty miles or so. Too much chance, not many opportunities for user input. But way beyond my web-coding skills, so bravo for what it is.

Very Clever . . . There should be an Eat a Snickers button! I needed just a little bit more energy to get through the Smoky's!

    A Stats Board/High Score Board might be interesting also . . .

The first time I died at 111 miles due to lack of energy. The second time I made it 1145 miles but died due to a "banged up knee" after a few bouts of Lyme disease. I think I would have run out of money anyway because I took zeroes to try to get my health up.

    They Mags,

Thank you for putting this together. It can be a help to someone just starting off but may I suggest some minor tweets. The first is starting up, UL does not have to be home made gear. I for one buy my gear and can hold my own when it comes to UL. It can just give the wrong impression to someone just starting off.

When someone hikes with a 5 days pack of food, you are going to use more energy compare to when your hiking with two days of food. When planning on your hike day, it can make a different.

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to bust your chops because I'm not. I know you put in some work make this program. Thank you again.

I was thinking that too. I was instinctively trying to get to the next resupply with no food. There didn't seem to be an energy advantage to doing this.

I agree, it is a great piece of work. I wonder how many hundreds of man-hours were wasted today playing this. I know I had at least one.

I got poison oak 9 or 10 times and eventually died from it at mile 1836......not happy. Not allergic to the stuff and not happy.....

    Maybe tomorrow....
