Go with the resort so you don't have to deal with the PO being closed (knew a thru that had to wait Sat till Monday to get his package at the PO).

I used the PO last year. Very limited hours. Use the resort instead.

If you use the P.O., be sure to call first to check on hours. Last October before the multibillion-dollar so-called government shutdown wrecked the loop hike I had planned from Big Creek to Fontana on the AT and back to Big Creek on the Benton Mackaye, I called to see if it was still open Saturdays, was told it was open only from 11:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number, at least then, was 828-498-2315.

I've only been there once and the PO was open but definitely - use the lodge if that's an option.

I used the lodge. Got there on a sunday, so it was good to get my package a day ahead of my buddys who used the post office. And you dont have to be a guest at the resort to send a mail drop there.

Or treat yourself to a stay at The Hike Inn. Mail drops included with the cost of your stay.

The only mail drop I've done was to the PO at Fontana Village, ended up replacing most of what I'd mailed with stuff from the store, had a good selection when I was there and my taste had changed...being eatable became more important than being lightweight.

There were a lot of hiker boxes behind the front desk at the Fontana Lodge/Inn last April, so they are used to helping hikers. I'd recommend that option.

I also second the notion of just resupplying at the store. I did a mail drop, but if I did it again, I'd simply resupply at the store. I thought there was plenty of stuff there for a nice 6 day resupply through the Smokeys. I was there the first week of April.

I always thought that the top of the observation deck would be good because of LNT.
But really I'd love to drop some mail off the south side of the dam into the chutes. It seems like a really cool place to drop anything off of actually. I bet a golf ball would go really far....
Unfortunately I didn't have any mail with me and I couldn't try it.

The observation deck is fifty feet and a flight of stairs off the trail, but the dam of course is right on the trail.

    We live on a mountain
    Right at the top
    There's a beautiful view
From the top of the mountain
Every morning I walk towards the edge
    And throw little things off
    Like car-parts, bottles and cutlery
Or whatever I find lying around
It's become a habit, a way to start the day

I always got my resupply at the PIT-STOP it's the Convience store beside the road before you turn left and go into the village, plenty of good choices at resonable rates, but if i was gonna do a mail-drop at fontana i would either have at the lodge they will except you mail without overnight stay, but if i did plan to spend the night i would have the drop at the Appalachian Hike Inn they will not except your drop with out overnight stay.
