When I did the JMT in 2010 I bought a 9 day CA fishing license the starting date of which I synced with being in good fishing terrain. I took a small telecopic spinning rod with a few roostertails. At many high lakes I caught a variety of smaller trout. Some I threw back--they looked like they had been recently stocked. Most were above 10,000 ft at which level fires are not permitted. I cooked them in a titanium pot over an alcohol stove with a little water and onion powder. They came out great---best breakfast on the trail. I met one fisherwoman in the High Sierra who was based at VVR and was hiking from lake to lake. We exchanged fishing tales and she gave me a small spinner to try out.
Why no fires? Is there a fire ban in place this year?
There is a permanent fire ban above a certain elevation.
The guy I was hiking with boiled them in his Jetboil.
