    When is the best time to start the trail and have the best opportunity for the most water availablity?

    Northbound, usually around the first of April. Southbound, late September/early October.

    Snow pack in the high country and temperatures in the low desert are usually more important factors than water sources. Water availability mostly depends on snow melt and summer monsoon and varies per year. Check into Fred's water report on the ATA website.
