    Default Temperatures at Night

I will be section hiking the AT from Springer Mountain to Damascus VA beginning May 31. What temperatures can I expect at night in the mountains on the AT in the Southern Appalachians? How about daytime heat and humidity? Thanks.

    Hot, sticky, humid.
Both at night, and in day.

I wouldnt expect any overnight temp less than 50, possible exception in the highest elevations of smokies with a cool front, and 60 would be more common, 70 possible as well.

On our section hike the first week of June, 2003, starting at Springer, we had frost on our tarps the first couple of mornings. We sat eating breakfast wearing all our clothes, freezing. It did get into the 70s during the day, then into the 80s later in the hike.

I'd be prepared for temps into the 40s, if it were me. It likely won't get below 50, but it can.

Yes, it can get into the 40's in June, at night. And then go into the 70's and 80's in the daytime. But you don't want to be miserable trying to sleep, so I'd bring something warm to sleep in.

All of the above. Wife and I did a small section hike of the approach Trail in late May one year - we burned up. Recommended light fleece bags for the Scouts for our trip a few weeks later. We froze. Yikes.

Whatever you think the low is going to be plan for it to actually be 10 degrees colder where you camp.
Pain is a by-product of a good time.

Thank you for all your input. I was trying to figure out which sleeping bag to take. I appreciate all of you.
