If you know someone is out on the Trail send 'em 20 bucks and tell them to take a friend out for a pizza and a couple of beers. They'll remember this long after the jerky, cookies, Rice Krispie treats etc. are long forgotten. There is nothing remotely improper or vulgar about sending someone a few dollars as a surprise or gift. One size fits all and no one's ever felt the need to return or exchange it.

+1 on every thing mentioned up to here. Add homemade peanut brittle, my jerky recipe jerky, memory chips and a encouraging letter or note.

Anything that you can't normally buy in a trail town. Homemade cookies and brownies are a sure winner. As would be some prepackaged stuff that come from specialty food stores not likely seen in small trail towns.

One of the most memorable items I got was dehydrated vine-ripened tomatoes (paste really). My friend had sent all the food that was lacking when we hiked, and home-dried fruits and vegetables topped the list. Dried fruit is easier to find in stores, thus the veggies might be preferred. But the tomatoes were so delicious I had to pinch myself to be sure that I hadn't died and gone to heaven! I had dropped the entire bag into my dinner without meaning too and it was one of the BEST meals I ever had on the trial, made all the better by the surprise of it in the care package.

Something thoughtful, for example I love pumpkin flavoured snacks!

Smartwool socks, my sisters molassas cookies, and a few Jacksons. Also couple of packs of butts or some dip if I'm using tobacco which I wish I weren't.
